Owen S. Good is a longtime veteran of video games writing, well known for his coverage of sports and racing games.

If you didn’t know by now, Paramount is working up a live-action/CGI adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog, and Deadline reports that Jim Carrey is negotiating with the creators for the rolle of Dr. Ivo Robotnik, the Blue Blur’s longtime nemesis.

Sonic himself will be a computer-generated animated character when the flick launches (IMDB charts it for a 2019 launch). James Marsden (best known as Cyclops in the X-Men flicks) and Tika Sumpter (The Haves and the Have Nots) have already been cast but their roles are not yet known.

Carrey, 56, was an A-list superstar more than 20 years ago. In 1994 he starred in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, then the The Mask (an adaptation of the Dark Horse Comics series) and the eminently quotable Dumb and Dumber alongside Jeff Daniels. That later won him a role in 1995’s Batman Forever as The Riddler, as that film canon careened into self parody, necessitating a series reboot a decade later. Carrey was nominated for a Golden Globe award for his role in The Mask and later won for his performance in 1998’s The Truman Show.
