Abmis the Lion

Moby ID: 28240

Description

Abmis the Lion, King of the Beasts, has a problem: all of his kingdom's potatoes have been stolen, without which his citizens may starve! You control his navigation through a side-view platform maze avoiding animal hazards and collecting dropped potatoes, using objects you find along the way, all in pursuit of the foxy thief. Once all a level's potatoes have been collected, a magical door will open permitting access to the next level.

1996? Looks like 1986...

The Good
I have a little bit of sentiment for this game because I love big cats, including lions. (And a lion collecting potatoes... it's so mellow and cute. ;)) The graphics are very simple, but nice enough, and the first level is still fun to play, even though it gets boring soon.

The Bad
Nevertheless, it's not a good game. It looks astonishingly retro for 1996 - not that I have anything about retro games, I actually can't even appreciate sophisticated multi-CD 3D hyperrealistic games... but bad retro games aren't fun. The "game physics" is very stiff, which makes the difficulty level soar after level 1 - if there are only screenshots from the first and second level on the site, I suspect it's because nobody is able to complete level 2. Crumbling platforms and stiff movement make some areas seem completely impossible to reach.

The Bottom Line
"Abmis the Lion" could have been a better game. Much difference between the levels in terms of appearance looks interesting enough. Had the difficulty level been toned down a bit, the game could have become quite a nice little platformer. Its simple graphics would be welcome as "retro" - now, with all the game's stiffness, I'd rather say the game is primitive in all aspects.
