Breaking Barriers and Building Bridges: Celebrating Women in Engineering and Empowering the Future

On June 23, we celebrate International Women in Engineering Day (INWED), an annual event highlighting the incredible achievements of women engineers worldwide. This day serves as a reminder of the many contributions women have made to the field of engineering as well as the ongoing challenges they face. Today, we applaud the achievements of trailblazing women at Microsoft who exemplify the spirit of INWED. These women embody resilience, mentorship, and a dedication to a more diverse and equal engineering community. Their stories show how far women have come—and the work that still needs to be done. Here’s how, in their own words, they continue to empower and uplift women in engineering for a brighter, more inclusive future.

Quote from Software Engineer 2 Rachel M reads “Engineering is a tool. Your creativity and ability to use it for interesting problems is what makes it valuable. It’s ok to not understand it right away. It’s ok to fail.

Inspiring future generations

It's crucial to encourage girls to pursue engineering at a young age. By engaging them early on, we can foster their interest in STEM and help break down barriers preventing them from pursuing engineering careers. With mentorship, exposure to real-world engineering experiences, and resources showcasing the incredible possibilities within the field—we can cultivate the next generation of fearless female engineers.

Quote from Software Engineer Harmanpreet K reads “We just don't have enough women in engineering as of today, but we as a society are trying to change that reality."

Building connection

Strong networks with other women are vital. Together, we can enhance problem-solving and fuel innovation by fostering diverse perspectives and collaboration. It's not about excluding others, but rather creating an inclusive space where everyone feels valued and respected. Through connection, we can help dismantle gender stereotypes and create supportive environments for women engineers to thrive.

Quote from Principal Development Lead Bhairavi K reads “I actively contribute my time and effort in giving back to the aspiring and talented women engineers around me. I create a sense of belonging through consistent listening, engaging in meaningful conversations, mentoring, and advocating for them."
Quote from Software Engineer Susy Qinqin Y reads “Throughout the years, I have had the privilege of mentoring several women. I strongly believe in the power of information, as it enables women to be aware of the vast possibilities available to them.”

Opening doors of opportunity

Creating inclusive and woman-friendly workplaces is critical. By providing equal opportunities for career growth, eliminating biases in recruitment processes, and supporting work-life balance, we can ensure that women are welcomed and encouraged to make their mark in engineering.

Quote from Principal Program Manager Alicia C reads "I’ve overcome obstacles by continuing to stand up for myself, earning the respect of my coworkers, and not being afraid to raise my hand to help out the team where needed."

Ensuring equality

Monitoring and closing the gender pay gap is another crucial step in promoting women's advancement in engineering. Equal opportunities and fair compensation are fundamental to building a diverse and inclusive engineering workforce. It's time to bridge the gap and recognize that women engineers deserve the same recognition, respect, and financial rewards as their counterparts.

Quote from Modern Work Architect Susana I reads "I believe it’s the responsibility of women to claim our seat on the table. We must make it more inclusive and diverse by choosing engineering over other fields.”

The remarkable achievements of women in engineering inspire us to challenge norms, push boundaries, and create change. By weaving their stories into the larger INWED narrative, we recognize the invaluable contributions of women in engineering and inspire future generations to pursue careers that shape the world. Together, we can forge a path towards a brighter, more equal future, where engineering embraces the talent and potential of individuals of all genders.
