in 2017 I was promoted from SDR to SDR Manager and took over the team I was an SDR on. Here is what I did to make it happen outside of hitting quota of course. 1. Lead by example everyday. I showed up on time, worked hard, always went above and beyond in everything I did, never made excuses, and always took all the feedback and coaching I could get. 2. Up leveled others on the team. Constantly helping with new hires or reps that were struggling sharing what was working for me, providing coaching and support where needed. Basically doing the job before I got the job. 3. Built great relationships with leaders and AE's throughout the company all the way up to the CEO and VP of Sales. Was proactive about going into peoples offices to chat or grabbing time on their calendar so everyone knew who I was. 4. Positive attitude, there was a lot I could have complained about. My comp plan got changed 4 times in 6 months, a lot of broken processes or things that needed to be addressed. Instead of crying about it I used those great relationships I had built to be proactive at providing feedback and potential solutions so I was looked at as a problem solver vs. a complainer. A lot of these points are just who I am as a person but at the same time it really helped me move up and create a very good brand for myself internally. Taking over the team that I was once a peer on was no easy task though..story for tomorrow lol

In honor of BDR/SDR Appreciation Week - take a moment and remember what it was like to break into the Sales/SaaS world. It's not easy driving top-of-funnel pipeline! And it's incredibly important for a Sales Org's success regardless if it's an outbound or inbound engine. I remember starting as a SDR back in June 2018 back when Chili Piper was still bootstrapped and walking into a WeWork to work under Michael Tuso with long days of cranking out cold calls and sending out Vidyards with Mikhail Yeremeev (time really flies). That experience really drove my love for Sales and SaaS and was my foot in the door. You don't land in a closing role overnight and you can't climb the ranks without putting in the work - the SDR/BDR role is one that teaches you an incredibly valuable skillset that's useful in so many different roles (not just as SDR//BDR Management or an Account Executive). SDRs and BDRs are the leaders of tomorrow - lend a helping hand regardless if they're internal or external. Remember that many of our companies' success relies on the success of the SDR/BDR org 🙂 Can't win an opportunity that was never in a sales cycle 💡

Getting promoted from BDR to AE depends on 3 things: 1. Your numbers 2. Your skillset 3. Your personal brand Most BDRs work on the first two. Your hiring manager needs to know how you built the 3rd. The 3rd tells them what else you will contribute to their team. Run a project. Organise an event. Do it to achieve something. Move a metric. Be known for it.

Last week, I reviewed 60+ applications from AE’s for The Elites awards. A few things stood out to me when trying to find the best of the best.  It wasn’t just about quota attainment. Sure, that’s a big part of it. But what set the best apart? ⭐ Generating their own pipeline - some of the best AEs were generating as much as 90% of their own pipeline. You can’t just rely on SDRs and Marketing to do it all. ⭐ Whilst the role is an ‘individual contributor’, the best AEs are team players. Helping new joiners, onboarding, taking on additional responsibility. ⭐ Creativity - willingness AND demonstration to cut through the noise to attract attention, move deals along and get buy-in. True grit. ⭐ Promoted from within. Some of the best nominees were those who started as an SDR (in some cases despite having sales experience in another industry) ⭐ Investing in their personal brand - whether that's to help peers in the sales community or be a thought leader for prospects and customers. We're sending at least 4 SDRs next year + an SDR Mgr to Cabo San Lucas. Let's see who earns it.

Only 1 in 12 SDRs are feeling fulfilled. There’s a disconnect between managers and reps. And a big part of this is the coaching & support they're receiving. People in this role want to be able to see progression, have the opportunity to upskill and get to the next stage in their career. If you’re an SDR manager, make it your priority to give your reps the opportunity to grow.
