This is a great short read by our friend and SPAB scholar, Lewis Hobbs. We are regularly discussing #Thatching in our SPAB Technical and Research Committee meetings. These discussions brought focus to me on just how fragile the ongoing legacy of traditional crafts can be. It is not just the training and 'generational hand over' of these skills that is the challenge. It is a complex mix of economics, sustainability, materials, bureaucracy, and worst of all, ambivalence. With thatching in particular, there are theorietocally no practical barriers to achieving the growing and production of the sustainable supplies. Land could be attributed to reeds sustainably, long straw varieties could possibly be incorporated as part of wheat harvesting, and there is plenty of scope for managed coppicing of hazel for spurs. The real problems lie with misconceptions and economics. Installed and managed well, a thatched roof offers the ultimate sustainability, durability, and very good thermal properties (cool in the summer, warm in the winter). With reasonable costs for UK produced supplies and maintenance (not cheap, but sustainable), there would be jobs produced and a natural succession of this traditional craft. Many people are trying very hard to achieve this goal, but help is required and barriers and misconceptions need to be broken down.
