I spoke to an e-commerce business yesterday that has the most venomous love/hate relationship with Google. The profanities he used whilst describing what he thought of Google was quite astonishing. I asked, “how can you hate Google so much when it provides 80% of your revenue?” His answer… “Because they make it too difficult for my organic rankings to sustain consistency without constantly needing to put time or money into managing it” I had to explain that it’s not Google that’s making it difficult, it’s his competitors. They’re the ones forcing Google into how they rank him. If you’re not keeping up with your competition or doing more than them, you will find that you start to slip away from where you want to be. If position 10 on Google for your highest converting keywords is where you want to be, great! If you want to be higher, I can help you.

Business A Vs Business B - both in the same industry. Business A is 35 years old, turns over £4m per year now, but has always had a really poor online presence from a lack of investment in this area. All sales come from upsells to existing clients and the occasional new business comes from word of mouth. Has no outbound sales team. Business B is 4 years old, turns over £1m per year now, and has a good online presence from 2 years worth of SEO and social media strategies. Sales come from website enquiries, existing business upsells, and word of mouth. Has no outbound sales team. If both businesses were to continue with the same strategies, what business will turn over more revenue in 5 years time? To me it’s pretty obvious that business B will overtake business A. But why? Business B will be building their brand profile to a new audience so much quicker and will have consistency in doing so. Having the online presence means: 1. Business B will have a lot more visibility - leading to quicker growth, and 2. Will have more opportunities for proof of authority in their industry (despite business A serving the industry for a much longer period of time) - leading to quicker growth. A few weeks ago I shared the story of my 13 year old son Jesse starting his own car washing business. I’m happy to say that he and his business are going from strength to strength.
