VHF and UHF Explained This may qualify under the heading of “more than you need to know”, but if you’re curious to understand the nuances of radio communications, you may find this helpful. When it comes to choosing the right radio, one of the most difficult decisions to make is which bandwidth to utilize. The two major wavelengths used in vehicle to vehicle, or vehicle to base communications are VHF (Very High Frequency) and UHF (Ultra High Frequency). The differences between these bands may not seem that important, but when you have an incident that requires emergency communication, the last thing you need to worry about is your radio’s range. Emergency responses in high-risk environments: I believe that HF and VHF should be the last choice when no other telecommunication methods are available, as they can be lifesaving. In some field missions, innovation becomes crucial, as illustrated in the photo below. During the planning stage and before entering the area, we decided to install a VHF repeater because the area of operations was vast, to establish communications between field teams and the field radio room, a repeater was essential. However, in a desert environment like this, there are no buildings or mountains to facilitate the installation of a repeater. we opted to install the antenna on the roof of our vehicle, utilizing a telescopic mast that could extend up to 10 meters. Next to the vehicle, there is a VSAT providing internet connectivity for reporting to the SOC. The antenna type used is an omni-directional antenna, specifically the Hustler model. From here, the idea was born to design a vehicle equipped with all the necessary telecommunications systems to provide communications for field responses in remote areas.
