Reviewing yesterday's Speech from the Throne, it behooves me to speak to calls for economic diversification. At Inflexion Games, we're celebrating the opening of a new office space in Montreal, PQ and the expansion of our office space in Vancouver, BC. Both of those provinces offer IDM support programs that encourage us to hire local talent and grow our teams there. Contrast that to Alberta, which continues to lack any specific programs for our sector, and where we have canceled our option to double our footprint in Edmonton's downtown core. The consequence is the building in downtown Edmonton we were evaluating for our growth sits vacant and has recently been put up for sale. As Chair of Digital Alberta I hope to sit down with Minister Nate Glubish and his team soon so we can review their recently completed IDM study and ensure our sector can grow right here at home. #ableg #abtech #jobs

I don’t post about business travel too much but as I head home from my first visit to China, I’m very grateful to have visited Tencent Games this past week - engaging in meaningful conversations with both the Tencent team and other Studios from around the globe. We’re fortunate at Inflexion Games for the support and collaboration we’ve had from Tencent over the last 18 months as we final our first title Nightingale - now showcased with other upcoming titles in a gallery in one of the offices. And all this way from home, I felt obliged to have my first Double-Double in a while during one of the breaks. 😉

No other way to describe the frustration of watching Alberta be passed over for investment - and jobs - in the global IDM market. Listening to the budget announcement today, the Minister of Finance mentioned that the role of government is to "create the conditions favorable for investment attraction and wealth creation. And over the last 4 years this government was relentless in its focus to make Alberta the best place to do business in North America". It should have came with a disclaimer "except in the video game industry. We understand its a $200B USD global market that contributes over 5.5B in GDP to the Canadian economy - but we'll let other Canadian provinces continue to lap us while they attract millions in investment. And we're not interested in the opportunities to create additional jobs leveraging IDM technology to solve challenges across industries such as healthcare. Hard pass." So incredibly shortsighted.
