TIPS FOR GETTING A FIRST CLASS IN LAW SCHOOL
Dear Aspirants to the Bar,
It's OK to not want a First Class. However, if you do, remember to put in the effort. The opportunities that come with it are mind-blowing; and achieving it is bliss.
I hope you find the steps I took along the way helpful. Some of them are listed below.
FOCUS: Be determined to achieve the first class status. For me, it was either first class or nothing at all. Despite the fact that a portion of me would have agreed to something less, I made every effort to silence that voice so as not to let it undermine my self-assurance.
STRATEGIZE: A lot of your predecessors, some of whom had first class or 2.1 grades, would advise you to use a particular reading strategy that was successful for them. Touché.
Nevertheless, I decided to have mine. Although it was unconventional, it helped me finish the syllabus on time. Fortunately, I had enough to cover each topic six to eight times. Therefore, find yours and adhere to it. However, be adaptable to it.
You can contact me directly if you still want to learn more about my reading strategy.
SCHEDULE: I was basically preoccupied by three things: Read, sleep, eat, with a little fun in between to keep my body and soul healthy. If you understand what I mean. 😏
Listen! Law school is mentally exhausting. I won't tell you to live a life exclusive to books. You might not survive it. Literally.
I know friends who lost their minds months and weeks to bar finals due to the pressure.
However, keep your eyes on the prize while being spontaneous. Since you only have nine months, avoid anything that would distract you. I mean, all of this applies only if you want a first class.
REST: I emphasize this because, in addition to studying, it was a hobby. People I knew studied for the majority of the day and half of the night, leaving only a small amount of time for rest. That was not my act. Because it is not even healthy, I will not suggest that anyone do that.
I slept through the night and only read during the day. I committed to getting at least seven hours of restful sleep each night. To cope with the pressure, I had to reduce it to 5 hours during exams.
PRAY: The Grace of God is very important. All I've stated would just be meaningless if God didn't put his midas touch.
So, whether you believe in God or the wind, just try to stay in touch with your Chi constantly.
A combination of all these and some others worked for me.
In closing, I urge you to select the option that works best for you and apply wisely.
This is very important:
"He who aims at the sky reaches further than he who aims at the tree."
This has always been my driving force. Aim for a first class and put in the work, even though you don't make it, which I pray you do, you'll find yourself among the second classes.
I wish you all the best! 💙
