This is not great. Only 50% of CEOs were able to correctly identify the top priorities of the CMO and marketing department in their organizations. There is also a big divide in how customer centric the CEO thinks the organization is being versus the opinion of the CMO. And only about 10% of CEOs were once a CMO? Seems like a big miss to not have the C-level exec who is closest to the customer not rise to the top job. We spoke about this in depth at our panel at M20/20 last week. Agree there is so much progress yet to be made here - another scary stat: 40% of Fortune 500 companies don’t have a single growth- or customer-related role in their CEO’s executive committee. But there's big upside when CEOs place marketing at the core of their growth strategy - they are twice as likely to have greater than 5% annual growth compared with their peers.

🚨 CMO → CEO 🤔 Does it happen? I did a light Google search to see how many #cmos make it to CEO. It took me a minute. The most recent list I found was from a December 2022 Australian CMO publication focused on Australian business units. The list included:  🚗 Toyota/Lexus 🍎 Weight Watchers ✈ Jetstar 🚽 Kimberly Clark  💥 A few weeks ago, TGI Fridays announced the promotion of their CMO to #ceo , and there have been other CMOs along the way - typically from automotive and food and beverage companies that have done the same. But the numbers still seem low. Why aren’t more CMOs moving into CEO positions? 🔎 I suspect it has something to do with a perception that marketing is only responsible for brand awareness, product marketing and demand generation - a narrowly scoped focus that doesn’t translate to skills needed for a role like CEO.  💡 The reality is most CMOs focus on top-line revenue growth and how the business supports the buyer throughout their entire buyer’s journey - which requires having a GM mindset, often being profitability-focused and influencing capabilities across an organization.  All skills that seem to be part of a CEO's job description. ❓ So what are your thoughts? Moving companies so frequently as an executive isn’t easy, especially when the job is becoming more complex. According to the latest CMO Tenure Study from Spencer Stuart, CMOs working at the top 100 advertisers in the US had been in the role for just 37 months, or 3.3 years on average, the lowest level in more than a decade. While CMOs have arguably fought harder than anyone else to get a seat at the C-suite table, the current marketing complexities are negatively impacting the conversations with CEOs and how they come across in boarding settings. Divide Between CMOs and CEOs Is Growing The increase in marketing-adjacent titles—chief growth officer, chief digital officer, chief brand officer and the like—have also muddied CEOs’ relationships with CMOs. Interesting article on CMO tenure. Some tidbits: *TENURE: The average CMO tenure stands at just 40 months. This figure is the lowest for a decade, and is less than half the average tenure of a CEO, at 85 months. *Lack of Confidence in CMOs: According to a 2022 study from Boathouse, a marketing and communications agency, only 34% of CEOs have “great confidence” in their CMOs, and only 32% trust them. Suggestions: 1. Storytelling: CMOs have to get better at telling their own story and showing the value they add. 2. Incentives and conditions: Fix the conditions that CMOs work under. Re-balancing the role to emphasize strategic, long-term, and empirical decisions. 3. Leverage data and technology in improved ways. Great article referencing the debate over the roles and responsibilities of CMOs today. A quote from the article, “Nine out of 10 CEOs say that the role marketing plays is clearly defined at their companies, according to a new McKinsey survey that tracks relationships between CEOs and CMOs.
