Some personnal thoughts on AI generated images in concept art.
#Midjourney and other #AI image generation software have been getting a lot of attention lately with #artists of the #entertainmentindustry wondering if it will cost them their jobs.
As terrifying and powerful as they are these tools may need to be regarded simply as ways to work faster and generate ideas quickly. While the generated lighting and palettes are for the most part impressive, the AI images will require significant technical work to cleanup aswell as a creative mind to make sense of the sometimes very unusual if not inexplicable shapes. I also feel fearing these new tools -which was my first reaction- is not likely to make them them go away. In a not so distant future, Art Schools might even teach their students how to master these AI imagery tools.
The larger questions reside more in the legal grey area surrounding copyrights and ownership, and are intimately linked to how these images are actually generated. This is especially worrying for artists with very strong visual styles that some #software seem to have less trouble replicating.
This new option for plagiarism aside, I feel that until these software can actually generate textured 3D assets, rigged or animated assets, there will always need to be a creative team working around them.
After a few days of exploration, here is an AI assisted piece of #conceptart of an offworld refinery. Created with 2 seperate midjourney images, stitched together with large amount of photobash and paintover. I have to admit that was fun.
