Happy pride month! 🏳️🌈❤️ As we step into this vibrant month of celebration, I want to take a moment to reflect on the importance of visibility for queer individuals in the office space. As a proud lesbian and poly person, I understand the profound impact that being seen and acknowledged can have on an individual. It's about more than just being present; it's about creating a space where we can all feel safe, supported, and free to express our true selves without fear. While we celebrate Pride, we must also confront the rise in hate crimes in Norway (as well as the rest of the world), a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle for true equality. Let's stand united against such hate and advocate for a society where love and acceptance prevail. Visibility matters. It paves the way for understanding, acceptance, and change. This Pride, let's commit to fostering an environment where every voice is heard, every identity is respected, and every person can thrive. Just in time for the end of 🌈 Pride Month, our friends at LGBTQ+ Victory Institute released their 2024 "Out for America" report. It is packed with insightful stats and data visualizations. We're happy to share it while highlighting a few notable findings: • Every state (plus Washington, D.C.) has at least one out LGBTQ+ elected official serving, totaling at least 1,303 LGBTQ+ elected officials nationwide. • Along with the good news, a caveat: At least 38,193 more LGBTQ+ people must be elected to achieve equitable representation. • Of particular interest to our mission: There are currently 235 LGBTQ+ state lawmakers (and only Louisiana, West Virginia and Idaho have no out legislators). A time to celebrate with, advocate for, listen to and show absolute support of our wonderfully diverse LGBTI+ communities and reflect on how we can all be the change we want to see in the world. We've taken some decent strides towards equality in recent years. That being said, we still live in a world where Faith-based schools can LEGALLY expel and sack LGBTQ students and teachers respectively; where elite sportspeople in major codes don't feel safe being 'out'; and where sickening violence and displays of hatred can still bubble to the surface as they did just a few short months ago in Melbourne and Sydney... there is still a very long way for us to go. It is great to see all the progressive organisations here on LinkedIn making pride pledges, implementing inclusion programs, rainbowing their logos, encouraging the use of gender neutral language and respecting each other's pronouns. Descrimination in (almost...) all its forms is illegal...hopefully the Attorney General's review of Faith-based schools will bear fruit... but laws are the effect, not the cause of social change. The cause can start with a simple little thing like rainbowing your logo, engaging in a conversation and making your employees and colleagues feel comfortable to bring their whole selves to work. #diversityequityandinclusion #prideatwork #prideisnotjustforamonth
