During the course of last year, my role in RedR UK focused primarily on responding to the emergencies caused by the earthquakes in Türkiye, Syria, and Morocco, as well as the floods in East Libya; and one of the mutual issues emerging from all these disasters was the impact of communications blackout hindering recovery and rescue efforts (e.g. section 6.9 in our EEFIT Mission report in Türkiye: https://lnkd.in/drjGhqnA ). However, another mutual characteristic was the lack and absence of protocols in restoring communications in the first 24-48 hours, which is believed to cause more loss of life. Albeit, not part of a national strategy, but Huawei in Libya managed to quickly act and support the rescue efforts by reestablishing sites in the affected areas (a lot more in the video shared by Aymen below). I'm not a telecoms engineer, but that's just my two cents on the matter. #DRR #Engineering #Humanitarianism

Concerns about the so called "Safe Supply Drug" Program in BC: 1️⃣ Toxicity of unregulated drug market remains unaddressed. 2️⃣ Overdose deaths have not decreased, with 2,224 in BC in 2021. 3️⃣ Public safety is at risk with increased public drug use. 4️⃣ Lack of support services perpetuates addiction cycle. BC NDP/Liberal Premier David Eby's recent plans to recriminalize public drug use shows a shift in government stance. Due to his lack of support in the polls , his about face looks like its purely out of self interest & self preservation. Drastic measures for identifying & addressing root causes of addiction, ensuring public safety, and providing support services is needed. Let’s work together and oust the NDP/Liberal government coalition from BC and tell them NO MORE so called "Safe Supply" paid for by tax payers and recriminalize hard drugs. We need to tell the NDP/LIBERAL's to Stop poisoning our community, secondly stop acting like you didn't create the problem. Jagmeet Singh is POISONING our province and our country by supporting the Liberals. He can put a vote of no confidence at any given time, but instead he chooses to flood British Colombia with Hard Drugs to poison British Colombians.

Well worth considering if leaving the service.

NOT SHAMEFUL TO REMEMBER Memories of war enable our society to remember the past, to express appreciation to those who sacrificed their lives and willingly served our country. At the same time we also need to acknowledge and accept that on occasions, events and happenings from the past, which would be considered unnecessary today, occurred for significant and highly acceptable reasons. Those of us today should never feel guilt nor shame for these actions, which some are constantly demanding that we do. This is why we, as Australians, come together every ANZAC Day. We do it to commemorate the ANZAC’s and their achievements: we should remember them though, not as old soldiers from a forgotten war, but as the young Australians each of them were in 1915, when they left our shores to defend Australia. Remembering moments from our history allows us as a society to learn from them and to move forward in a positive and determined manner. We cannot change history and nor should we, but we can and should learn from it. Australians young and old, will always remember them.

The power of being honest with ourselves In 2018 I was fortunate to hear a lady called Professor Nicola Fear speak at the Australasian Military Medical Association Conference. Professor Fear is an epidemiologist and internationally recognised subject matter expert on Resilience. She said something very simple but very powerful: "A significant predictor of individual and collective resilience is self-awareness and insight." In simple terms she was saying that when we are honest with ourselves we are best positioned to cope and, in my opinion, to succeed. Living in denial is not helpful. Something to think about when we prepare to start our day. If things aren't as they should be in our lives, what might we do differently to get a better outcome. Small steps.... Go well 😉

Only a life lived for others is a life worth living.

As I transition out of the Navy, I have realized articles like this are a new map to redefining success and fulfillment.
