Our mindset can act as barrier or an accelerator. Participating in at study with Professor Brock Smith at the University of Victoria this week, helped me to better understand that a lot of my limiting beliefs come from my past and have been based on the perspectives of well meaning adults in my life. Now when I notice my limiting beliefs creep in, I choose to let go of what is not mine and focus my mind on what helps me move forward and get to the next level, I leave the head trash in the rear view mirror. 1 book that completely transformed my outlook on life. One of my mentors always said “problems are like gifts, the more you collect the more you grow” I was young and naive and I’d roll my eyes in frustration! I brought my problems to him hoping for a solution and his philosophical quote was lost on me! But after reading “The Obstacle Is The Way” by Ryan Holiday, it all made sense. I’ve learned that problems and adversity are a given in life so I can choose to see them as a frustration and get upset or I can become a master at staying calm and overcoming them one by one. It’s not the nature nor magnitude of the problem that’s the issue. It’s the mindset you have when you approach it. Holiday writes; “What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger” is not a cliche but a fact. Psychologists call it adversarial growth and post traumatic growth. The struggle against an obstacle inevitably propels the fighter to a new level of functioning. The extent of the struggle determines the extent of the growth. The obstacle is an advantage, not adversity.” So the next time something doesn’t go to plan, you’re having a tough day or there’s challenges at home I want you to remember this. How can you stay calm and take the first step in overcoming this? How is this a gift for you? In what way are you getting stronger? It's now one of my favourite books of all time. I’ve gifted this book to many patients, colleagues and mentees of mine over the last few years. Our minds take the current event, pull past experiences from our memories to create a context, and blend them together to formulate an interpretation of the current event. The mind forms assumptions, draws conclusions, and creates the basis for our actions . It happens instantaneously, in about one-tenth of a nanosecond. Past dwellers - Closed chapters yet to guide Finding a mentor among those who have passed away after living their best lives could be challenging but might be worth the effort, as their lives represent closed chapters with questions that already have answers. This way, you won't have an overwhelming number of questions to seek answers for. Consciously or unconsciously adopting someone as a mentor can lead to a transformation into a person we truly are not. The desire to emulate someone may grow, causing us to discover a version of ourselves that speaks someone else's words, lives according to someone else's intentions or principles, and wears someone else's mask. When the person we've been imitating falters, we might confront a self-crisis, questioning our true identity and struggling to recognize the original self, as we've become someone unfamiliar through the process of emulation. Emphasizes that learning from individuals with completed life chapters involved understanding their mistakes as questions and comprehending the ensuing consequences and regrets as the answers, signifying true learning. Don't perceive any negativity in missing out on yesterday or being labeled ‘past dweller.’ In fact, that vintage guide or manual would provide fundamental insights into life.
