📈 What the Experts Think: Accountancy & Finance 📈 We managed to snag ourselves an interview with the Financial Director of a leading construction firm, asking them a number of questions relating to the future of their industry, as well as their pathway into a career in Accountancy & Finance. "What do you look for in a prospect?" "We have a succession plan. So, people coming up through the ranks, who are performing well and demonstrating all sorts of core competencies and our core values, will be noticed. If we identify someone, we may ask whether they are ready for a new challenge within the company or whether they will be ready in one, two or three years. We’ll ask whether we can assist them in growing into a new role. We look from within our ranks first and that doesn’t necessarily mean somebody within the department. Someone from the helpdesk demonstrating a willingness to learn and change their area of expertise isn’t exempt from internal opportunities on the finance side. If they show they are ready for a new challenge, we are known to coach and develop our team. We have multiple examples from our team and our succession plan in action. We have a very detailed career pathway mapped out as well as within each department, everybody knows the trajectory to management and there are examples of employees who’ve trodden that path." Finance jobs are like London buses, you wait ages for one and then 3 come along at once! I often see the pattern in Finance that there are no needs in a certain area and then all of a sudden every client wants the same thing at the same time. While this is great for candidates who posses the skillset of the hour, it can leave others feeling like they're waiting for a bus that isn't coming. At the moment I am seeing an busload of technical Accounting roles. What do we think the next bus load will look like? Ever seen someone secure a career move which provided them the change and career progression that seems out of reach for you? It might not just be down to good luck you know… I’ve just begun a search for such a vacancy. The development opportunity in this role will be night + day from what’s typically available in most #legalfinance roles. The hiring firm aren't asking for much either. Just some solid experience within legal finance plus the desire and ability to continue developing your accounting experience to cover a wide range of responsibilities. The catch is that you need to speak fluent French. But don’t stop reading if you can't either, as this could still help you. I’ve built some search strings this morning to start #sourcing an initial longlist of potential applicants with the necessary French language skills. Now, I know in the UK we’re well behind our European neighbours in speaking a second language, but the results of these searches are still more limited than I suspect is actually the case. I’m willing to bet there are number of people working in #legalfinance in London who can speak business level French, but haven’t added this to their LinkedIn profile. That’s a sufficiently rare and valuable skill that’s been left unsearchable. And this won’t just apply to languages either. Maybe you’re a Legal Cashier, who’s developed super-advanced Excel skills. Or an eBiller who’s learning SQL. It doesn’t matter what it is. If you have some unique experience or skills/ability which aren’t a necessity in your current line of work, but might be in the job you'd like next, make sure it’s searchable on your LinkedIn profile. It’s an advantage you hold over your peers. And it might be just enough to land you a job that's beyond your expectations.
