When is the time to hire a PR agency? Part 2️⃣🌟 Yesterday, I discussed two vital reasons for businesses to consider hiring an external #PRagency for their expanding communication needs. As promised, now, I'm back with the third and arguably most important point on our list. Goal 3 (My personal favourite): Expanding media coverage📰 In companies with an in-house PR manager, this individual often takes on the role of a strategist and develops the overarching PR direction for the agency. Businesses recognise that increasing media coverage demands additional resources, making it an opportune time to engage a PR agency. We at Drofa Comms particularly appreciate collaborating with in-house PR managers in such scenarios. These professionals grasp the nuances of PR goals and pose insightful questions. One of my preferred methods of working with clients involves partnering closely with their in-house PR teams. Often, these relationships evolve into long-term partnerships built on mutual trust, where the external agency actively participates in internal meetings and discussions. This collaborative approach enables us to effectively cover multiple regions simultaneously and seamlessly manage a variety of content formats, including interviews, press releases, market commentary, tier-1 media articles, and event management. Sometimes very little. The difference is really in the talent. You're hiring individuals, when the deliverable is comparable to that provided by consultants. I've met and worked with plenty of PR and advertising agency execs who are as proficient at approaching and considering client challenges as business strategists as they are in their role as marketers and communicators. Is it a mistake to only hire a PR agency with experience in your sector/tech? 🤔 It is tempting to want to work with an agency whose PR consultants have prior experience with a particular technology or industry sector. 💡 A perception that it is quicker to onboard and understand the tech. 🏃♀️ ‘Knows’ the right media already. 🎯 Seen as safer. 🛡️ But I would argue this is the wrong way to look at it. ❌ Often (in my experience anyway), the brands that insist on this are quite niche – maritime logistics, DFIR, mobile data, MedTech 🚢🔬🛰️ etc – meaning the number of consultants who have worked in their particular corner are limited. 🧐 This reduces the range and choice of good PR teams you can work with. 🤏 Just because someone has worked in your sector/tech, it doesn’t mean they are good. 🤷♀️ A good PR consultant has worked across multiple industries, with many different brands and tech. 🎯 He/she should have the ability to quickly pick up and understand even the most complex of technologies – at least from a macro story telling point of view. 🤯 Someone with a wide range of experience across multiple industries will be able to see your tech/brand in a different light, from a different angle. 💡 He/she will have experience working with media across multiple sectors, industries, types etc. 📰📺📻 I understand the urge to work with a consultant with prior experience in your specific niche. 🤝 But this is not always the right way to go about it. 🤷♀️ Hire for creativity, range of experience and attitude. 🎨💡🚀 A good PR consultant will get to grips with your brand no problem. 💯 When hiring a PR agency, focus on finding an agency with a creative approach, a proven track record of success, and a good understanding of your business goals. 🎯 Don't make the mistake of limiting yourself to agencies with experience in your specific sector or tech. 🚫 Agree/disagree? 💭 #b2bPR #publicrelations #Tech #Hiring

Growing B2B companies often struggle to determine if they should hire a corporate communications professional in-house or choose an agency when it’s time to scale the business.  Ideally it’s a combination of both because an experienced in-house communications leader will know how to work with the agency to optimize the return on investment with them, especially if they have experience on both sides of the fence. But as a start-up, how do you afford to have both an experienced in-house communications leader and an agency? Hire a fractional chief communications officer, or fCCO. Fractional CCOs can move as quickly as anyone else on your internal leadership team to respond to the fast-changing circumstances of a startup. They can use EOS if that’s how you run your business. They are truly accountable for setting and achieving communications objectives. They know how to advise CEOs, strategize and synchronize with CMOs and CROs to support growth goals, and work with HR leaders to build employer brands that attract and keep the right people in the right seats. And you only pay for the fraction that you need. The fCCO is well-positioned to hire agency support as needed to help execute the program they define with you. Agencies are particularly great at bring creativity and executing thought leadership campaigns, knowing how to work with journalists outside of your core 3-4 editors/reporters, scaling to support important shows or launches, entering new international markets, and staying on top of the topics and issues most likely to drive interest and engagement across earned and social media. Good agency teams should also have great content writers (though that’s not a given).  #PR #marketing #startups
