When I first met Michael, he had been job hunting on his own for four months, getting rejections left and right, and applying to jobs he wasn’t even sure he really wanted. He was feeling deflated. And to make matters worse, he didn’t have any structure or organization to his job hunt. Ironically, he felt like structure or organization were the strengths he brought to his line of work in HR and people operations. I caught up with Michael a week before he started his new job as a people operations manager for a software company in the Bay Area and we talked about the challenges of looking for a new job and how working with a personal career coach helped him overcome those challenges and gain the confidence and ability to land the job he wanted. The most important thing is identifying the level of difficulty, as the increasing order below 1. Role Change 2. Company Change 3. Rejection or failure of a job interview is very normal. Getting a job is a probability meaning that the chances of an individual to get a job are usually less than one, or we can say it's a half. In recruitment process, the HRD is responsible for shortlisting candidates from a pool of applicants. The applicants who best meet the desired and required criteria will be shortlisted and there is no short cut, the HRD will highly base on the applicants scored cards. In other words they will highly consider the education level of the applicant, experience, communication skills and professional skills. And those who best meet the required and desired criteria will stand higher chances of getting the job because the shortlisting process is always free and fair from bias. So my friend being rejected is very normal and it should not even be regarded as a major stressing factor in life. If you fail go and start doing other things. Be practical, engage your self in vocational studies or you can start motor vehicle repair slowly by slowly you can achieve your goals. It's funny people who never went to school are the ones repairing motor vehicles for lecturers, doctors, lawyers and professors, some times I look at those boys and I wonder how they came to know the system of the motor vehicles, others you find them repairing phone but they are not the manufacturers. Oh LinkedIn, I have such wonderful news to share! After about 9 months of job hunting, I’ve accepted an offer from #Walmart to be a #Workfront Project Manager for Walmart Connect! 💖 I start this week and I couldn’t be happier. To everyone still struggling in your job search: I know it’s easy to get discouraged. There were multiple times when a position seemed like a sure thing for me but didn’t pan out for whatever reason. It’s okay to be a little crushed by these experiences, and I would definitely give myself a few days to get back into the right headspace to continue my search. Remember to take breaks when you need to. Know your worth, and do your best to show up on calls/interviews with all of your confidence. After all, companies are hiring looking for YOUR skill set! You are bringing something crucial to the table for them, too. I found that my best interviews were ones where I showed up as an equal, knowing I possessed the skills and experience the position required. Things I didn’t know, I was confident I could learn. Highlight how you can bring value to the organization, or how you’ve accomplished similar tasks/projects before. TL;DR: Don’t give up. Take breaks when you need to. Show up with confidence because you know your value. Good things will come. :) In the interest of avoiding toxic positivity (a huge thing on this platform), I feel I should disclose: I’m in a fortunate living situation where I don’t need to worry about keeping a roof over my head. I understand we don’t all have that luxury. I am by no means a career coach or expert, but if anyone in my network wants advice or a cheerleader during your job hunt, I’m happy to help however I can. ❤️

Like many are now, this time last year I was made redundant, it was unexpected and was first time in my career that I had ever been in that position. To say the least it was an emotional rollercoaster, I spent way too much time thinking if there was any way it could have been avoided, There were several things I feel that helped me through it and got me in a position that secured a new fantastic role within HSS Hire So in my way of showing support for the people that find themselves in this position now here is some pointers that helped me for what it’s worth. 1 - Talk to people that have experience in this position. I was lucky enough to have a wide network built over the years to talk to and message with. 2 - Take time to think about what you want and need from a position (few times I applied for roles that were not right, but I was putting so much pressure on myself) 3 - Network, make contact with previous colleagues and reach out to new connections within companies you like the look of. (This was a big part of securing my new position) 4 - keep track of the jobs, messages and applications made. If you know me then you know I like a spreadsheet, this was my search bible, helped me keep focus. 5 - I won’t say set a set an amount of time to search and apply, I was on LinkedIn and other sites most of my days, but I did take time out each day to Walk sometimes only 30min others 3-4 hours, 6 - probably most importantly remember this this not just happening to you, I did not talk enough with my Wife what was going on and what I was thinking, I could have saved myself lots or stress. If I realise earlier that it was something the full family (and Friends) were going through with me. Hopefully these points are helpful, wish all the hunters out there best of luck, I firmly believe preparation will meet opportunity. Pic was 12 months ago on one of my walks.
