Last week marked the end of my 12-month industrial placement at the Nationwide Building Society.
I was fortunate enough to have spent the year working in the Financial Statements Team, which sits within the broader Financial Reporting Function at the Society.
In what has been a challenging year, I am happy to say that I was able to add real value to the team. Early on, I took ownership of the relationship and account preparation for The Nationwide Foundation, an independent charity funded by Nationwide, later playing a key role in the external audit at year-end. I also worked with the team to prepare and deliver the interim and year-end consolidated financial report for Nationwide. During this period I prepared two of the supporting notes as well as owned the casting control process, which played an integral role in ensuring the integrity of the report that we published.
This opportunity has allowed me to better grasp what it takes to run an organisation of this size. I will look back fondly at my time in the Financial Statements Team and would like to express my utmost gratitude to all of the colleagues that I worked with during my time at Nationwide. Also, those who took time out of their day to deliver insightful teach-ins into other functions across the business.
I am pleased to have contributed to the Financial Reporting Function at Nationwide and I am excited to be returning to the University of Exeter to complete my BSc in Accounting and Finance.
