Today marks 9 years since the Shopify IPO. When we did the IPO Roadshow, we did 93 presentations. A lot of people did not get Shopify. They’d say: you’re just an ecommerce provider and you’re just taking a slice of the existing pie. What many failed to understand was we were not just taking a slice - we were growing the entire commerce pie itself. And that’s what we have been doing since day 1. We are making it possible for more people to participate in entrepreneurship. We are the commerce everywhere company. And we are making commerce better for everyone. And of course the biggest thank you to Tobias for creating the most incredible company (and mission) ever. Life’s work 💚

Congrats!!! I recall doing the first Google Wallet -Shopify deal back in ~2014 and I had to fight to get some tweaks to the product to support the integration since no one on the team knew what Shopify was! How times have changed!

Hmmm... Growing the economy by creating new commerce. That analogy makes me think that part of Shopifys future lies in enabling more circular economy / recommerce - as it is exactly that: growing the entire pie, but sustainably. Congrats on the anniversary anyhow to all 🫡

But what they didn't understand was that we were expanding the pie itself. From the very beginning, Shopify has been about more than just e-commerce – we've been about empowering entrepreneurship and democratizing commerce. We've made it possible for more people to start and grow their businesses, effectively becoming the commerce everywhere company. 1moHarley Finkelstein I remember how proud everyone was in Ottawa. It felt like a phoenix rising from the ashes after a very long tech hangover (following the dot.com bust). I think we also saw Kinaxis, Halogen (now Cornerstone), and later Canopy Growth go IPO (locally) in and around that time ... exciting times and inspirational for a new generation of entrepreneurs. It would be cool to document the halo effect of Shopify on the Canadian economy - a family tree to show how many spin off and adjacent companies were inspired as a result of Shopify, as well as quantifying the economic gdp impact, tax revenue enabled, and jobs created. Something like this was done for Nortel in the early 2000s and it revealed over 250 companies that could trace their origins back to this 110 yrs old company. It’s not just a neat exercise but one that drives positive reinforcement for government, serves as an advocacy tool for tech policy and entrepreneurship, and documents the ancillary impact of enabling a 100 yrs Canadian tech anchor.
