Reciprocity in relationships is the mutual exchange of energy and support between partners. There are different types of reciprocity: Generalised reciprocity is giving without expecting a specific outcome, balanced reciprocity is an equal give-and-take, and negative reciprocity is unequal. 2. How do you unwind after a busy week at Schoolwear Solutions? Do you unwind when you are a parent? I walk 13000 steps outside of the busy back to school. 3. What’s one book that has significantly impacted your life? The Lord of the Rings. 4. Do you put jam then cream or cream then jam on a scone? I don’t eat scones. 5. What’s a fun fact about you that not many people know? I played the widow Twankey in Aladdin twice while at comprehensive school. 3 Things I've Learned From the last 3 years of building community with Forever Athlete LLC: 1. True community requires consistency. Anyone can throw a one off good & fun event, but the real measure of how strong your community is through how often they are willing to show up consistently. 2. The unseen prep details make the difference. I remember talking with my videographer after our first Away Game retreat and he made a comment about free flowing and simple I made things feel for everyone there, it felt like the perfect pace. That was a result of months of film and preparation work that allowed a seamless game day experience. 3. You don't need bells and whistles. Simplicity has been the name of the game. Some of our most impactful community events have just been recreation of the structure I grew up with in swimming. A good workout followed by a good meal goes a long way in building better relationships. Outside looking in, it's so simple, but it can be challenging to implement. This week is Carers Week. This year the theme is ‘Putting Carers on the Map’ highlighting the contribution of carers. I would like to draw your attention to the valuable role carers play in designing services. I’ve had the great privilege in my career to work with different carers to design services to better meet the needs of the person they care for, whilst also considering the carer experience in accessing services. Carers’ wealth of knowledge and experiences are invaluable to service designers. A staggering 82% of carers surveyed by Carers UK said the impact of caring on their physical and mental health would be a challenge over the coming year, with nearly 60% adding that being valued as a carer would improve their wellbeing. For the love of kidneys can we please please please STOP CALLING TEAM ACTIVITIES TEAM BUILDING! Going out to bingo with your team is not team building. Going to pick litter in a park, on a beach, in a forest is not team building. (It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it though!) Going out and getting absolutely gorilla’d off your face is not team building. Team building is a planned, intentional and focused thing where you align activities with your values, vision and mission with a specific outcome in mind of getting your team more connected (yes LEGO is obviously an option here 😉) Is there value in social activities to help strengthen relationships in the team….of course. But forcing the introverts to come to Karaoke and sing Gloria Gaynors anthem “I will survive” is going to have a negative effect on the team and not a positive one People strategy helps you work out when and where to have both in your years planning and how to make it as inclusive as possible.
