A daigou-related slowdown in the key markets of South Korea and Hainan weighed on L’Oréal Groupe’s first-half travel retail performance, the French beauty powerhouse has revealed. Despite the travel retail softening, groupwide revenue rose +12% on a reported basis (+13.3% like-for-like) to €20.57 billion in the six months ended 30 June. During a post-results earnings call, L’Oréal Chief Financial Officer Christophe Babule said travel retail momentum slowed in the period, partly due to the impact of a high comparison basis in Q2 2022 and this year because of reduced sales in the aforementioned key markets. The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. President and CEO Fabrizio Freda has welcomed a recovery in the US beauty company’s North Asian travel retail business as key to a +5% year-on-year increase in net sales to US$3.94 billion during the third quarter ended 31 March. ELC’s Q3 growth in Asia Pacific travel retail was driven by higher shipments in line with enhanced sales and improved retail inventory levels following the well-documented issues relating to the 2023 crackdown on unstructured market activity in Hainan and South Korea. But with much of that set to come from tourists and ex-pats on a global scale, how are leading brands doing breaking into the domestic market? As February draws to a close, the Chinese luxury fashion and travel market experienced a surge in consumer spending and travel activity during the Chinese New Year festivities. With a burgeoning consumer base, Chinese shoppers are significantly influencing global luxury sales while simultaneously driving innovation and demand in multiple sectors. Here are some key elements and updates of the consumer spending trends:  ✈️Chinese tourism is likely to keep growing, with estimates indicating that there could be 140 million outbound trips by 2024, according to the China Tourism Academy. 💄Referred to as "Self treatment," by Tmall shoppers, the beauty and health market is gaining attraction by Chinese consumers, emerging as a top-selling and trending industry; trending now, China’s anti-aging market size is expected to reach US$15.02 billion by 2024.
