Thrilled to see the Building Societies Act 1986 (Amendment) bill clear its final stages in Parliament today. This has been several years in the making and it gets Royal Assent in the nick of time. The Bill’s title might not be the snappiest, but it has some real world impacts. 🔷 It will help to free up billions of extra lending capacity for the housing market. 🔷 It levels the playing field with banks so that it’s easier for building societies to do things like virtual meetings. 🔷 It helps building societies compete with banks to give customers more choice in financial services. A very big thanks to Julie Elliott MP for taking the bill through the commons and Rt Hon Lord Kennedy of Southwark PC for taking it through the lords, and to HM Treasury and Bim Afolami MP for the government’s support. A very big thanks also to colleagues at Nationwide Building Society, Building Societies Association and 56˚ North for all their work on this bill. #Building Societies Act, level playing field, financial services.

A very important step for a better housing market. Very well done to all involved these technical matters don’t always get the attention they deserve vs the impact addressing them can have.
