ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX, but not the Rolex you’d think about! Today, we’re looking at a funky, yet classy Rolex Cellini “Midas” in 18k yellow gold that is so unapologetically 70s. From the asymmetrical case shape, the crown placed on the left side, the unique brick layered bezel, to that blue mirror dial, it’s nothing you expect when you hear “Rolex”. We’re always looking for alternatives from classic Rolex Datejusts, Oyster Perpetuals, and Submariners. As great as those models are, they are and will always be around in the market, but Cellinis like this are seldom seen, let alone in great shape. Once it’s gone, it’s gone and for good reason. Here’s an example of one of our offerings: a unique Vacheron Constantin in 18k white gold with a truly woven textured bracelet. Another important detail is it’s detail. What seems just like an ordinary black dial is actually a stone called onyx. Stone dials in Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Piaget, and of course Vacheron Constantin have grown in popularity for their distinct look and beautiful designs. Of course, it’s quite different then what collectors and the mainstream watch market are used to wearing. The market has been used to the blue dial sports watch craze. Gold is making its comeback and more importantly, dial details. Beautiful, rare dials and unique textures throughout the bracelet from these historically significant brands are the NEXT thing in watches. It will be interesting to see if brands such as Patek or Piaget reintroduce their 70s-80s gold examples into their current production line up. There’s a huge opportunity for these brands to take advantage of the new all gold trend with a fresh, modern take. We’re looking at great dial alternatives in both steel and two tone Datejusts from references such as 1601/1603s, 16014s (steel iteration) and 16013 (two tone). From boiler gage, tapestry, matte white, to factory diamond dials, there is a dial for everyone. These might just be random terms to you, but in the vintage watch world, each industry name means $500 increments, if not thousands. It’s important to point out different dial iterations in each reference. One of my personal favorites in this weeks curation is the two tone boiler gage (white arabic numeral) 16013.
