Politicians in Louisiana, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Texas have now taken on the cause of eliminating no-fault divorce. A recent article in The Guardian explains that right-wing opponents of no-fault divorce note that women, especially educated, self-supporting women, file for divorce more often than men and that no-fault divorce means men "can’t fight it." In other words, they can't force women who don't want to be married to them to remain married. They claim divorce hurts families and, by extension, society.  However, that fact doesn't match reality - in states that approved no-fault divorce, domestic violence rates dropped about 30%, the number of women killed by an intimate partner fell by 10%, and women’s deaths by suicide dropped by 8–16%. (Link to article in comments.) If politicians really want to stop things that hurt families and, by extension, society, they should work to #EndDomesticViolence, not no-fault divorce.

Between October and December 2023, the National Domestic Violence Hotline in partnership with If/When/How conducted a survey to learn about survivor experiences of reproductive coercion and abuse. So many survivors bravely shared their stories. They serve as a call to action to protect victims and survivors’ rights to control their own bodies and live free from violence. There are a significant number of children involved in the criminal legal system because of domestic violence perpetrated by a parenting figure in their homes. Not understanding where children's rights are being violated because systems & professionals are NOT properly assessing who is entering into our systems because of domestic abuse is very costly & socially harmful. Children are being incarcerated, separated from protective parents & kin, institutionalized globally because of the choices of a parent. Children are being traumatized & made more vulnerable because of institutional & professional practices & governments are spending trillions of dollars on 'interventions' which do not address the abusive parent as a parent, nor create family stability in light of their criminal & violent patterns of behaviors. We demand better! We can do better! Being domestic abuse informed means understanding how to assess & support children, their developmental, cultural & emotional needs.
