Standardising the use of electronic Bills of Lading (eBLs) will not only drive significant advantages across the global supply chain, but it will also help fast-track the digitalisation of trade. As we strive to advance and shape the future of trade, we are pleased to endorse the FIT Alliance eBL Declaration, openly pledging to collaborate with stakeholders on accelerating the digitalisation of trade. How do we overcome the legal and regulatory barriers to eBL adoption?
Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) just published a monster of a report on eBL adoption, based on extensive research carried out in 15 countries, representing 60% of global trade.
The 120-page report identifies the legal and regulatory barriers to the global supply chain’s goal of achieving 100% electronic bill of lading (eBL) adoption by 2030, and it will be a useful resource for carriers, shippers, banks and other stakeholders.
But above all, it is an appeal for governments and global organizations to work together to standardize legal requirements so we can clear the path for international trade’s much needed transition to a digital future.

A defining moment for electronic bills of lading
In June 2022 the newly formed FIT Alliance launched a survey among its membership to help identify what was hindering the adoption of electronic bills of lading (eBLs).
One of the commonly cited reasons was legal uncertainty due to few jurisdictions recognising eBLs as being legally equivalent to paper bills.
The good news is that there is now a determined drive globally towards legislative reform to give eBLs legal status.
