Christina Giakou hosted the latest The CGT Circle event at The IN Group’s London office last week. Our panel of Charlotte Smerdon, Jacqueline Abbas PhD, Ming Ewe and Jyothi Kumaran discussed promoting career resilience among women, attracting investment to startup companies, factors to consider when joining startups and advice for coping with redundancy. Thanks to our amazing panellists for providing their insights and to everyone who joined us for a fascinating discussion. Women are...stripey! A fun and quirky introduction to epigenetics. Gene expression, calico cats, and yes, women are indeed stripey (at the epigenetic level). #biology #genetics #geneexpression #epigenetics #phenotype #wildtype https://lnkd.in/eVAB2ep5

Good news 👇 Representation is slowly improving in the Life Sciences industry. Diversity and inclusion are higher on the agenda than ever, with research indicating that 71% of healthcare companies' C-suite leaders believe that new working practices will benefit women's career trajectories. However, the broader picture isn't so clear-cut. A large, untapped pool of talent is often overlooked due to recruitment processes that don't have equality, diversity, and inclusion (ED&I) in mind. We look at how ED&I could be the key to overcoming recruitment challenges 👇 https://bit.ly/3Q23zXb #LifeSciences #Recruitment #Skills #Diversity #Inclusion

As I noted last week, Orion Corporation has a well-balanced gender split among its employees, with 57% being women. In STEM fields, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry, the most innovative solutions emerge when diverse backgrounds and viewpoints are equally represented and brought together. Read an interesting article where four of our women in science talk about their careers and the highlights of their work ⬇️ #WomenInSTEM #WomenInScience

The next Case study from our Oxfordshire Innovation Engine 2023 has been released! In this case study we have been looking at Biotechnology Research Company, Immunocore. Immunocore develops novel therapies that harness our immune system by using T Cell Receptor (TCRs) biology to fight cancer, infectious diseases and autoimmune conditions, using science that originated from research conducted at Oxford University. Researchers at the company develop, what they call, ImmTAX™ (Immune Mobilizing Monoclonal TCRs Against X disease) molecules. The idea of the ‘X’ is that the technology can be used to target cancers and other diseases, using the same approach. They work by helping the body detect cancer or disease and encourage the immune system to kickstart a patient’s natural defences, for cancer and infectious diseases, or control them, for autoimmune conditions. In talking about #ageism this week, young #womenentrepreneur like Alice Zhang does not look like many executives in the #biotech industry. In a sector where CEOs are usually older, veteran leaders, her youth is at times met with surprise and skepticism, she said. In the HBR article I referenced on Monday, it found that "Women under the age of 40 (such as Zhang) said they were called pet names like “kiddo,” and patted on the head. They also faced a “credibility deficit” where they were not taken seriously. They reported being mistaken for students, interns, trainees, secretaries, paralegals and more." Meanwhile, women between the ages of 40 and 60 were told they have “too much family responsibility.” Some search committees reportedly declined to hire women in their 50s because of “menopause-related issues” that “could be challenging to manage.” And women who were age 60 and beyond expressed feeling “discounted” and “irrelevant.” One physician told researchers that “while men become wells of wisdom as they age, older women are seen as outdated, harpy, strident,” one physician noted. “Our voices are discounted.” https://lnkd.in/gYDBjvkW However, on the upside Zhang also said: “The biggest journey for me as a founder was turning my inexperience from an insecurity to a #superpower.” https://lnkd.in/gHZ4r_8S #womeninbio #womeninscience #femaleleadership #ageism #femaleentrepreneur #biotechsisterhood #boardrooomready

We'd like to think that science is about truth, not power. But the story is a great deal more complex, as illustrated in this article shared through the Graduate Women in Science newsletter: https://lnkd.in/e5AHVQC5

"Our premise is that the field has totally overlooked a very important axis of immune modulation because it comes from glycoscience, which is a field not many people are that familiar with," says Dr Carolyn Bertozzi, Stanford University.
