Since it is "back to school" time for many, tomorrow on my week Linked Live Privacy Chat at noon ET I will focus on perhaps the biggest back to school issue -- how will kids, teachers, edtech companies, school leaders be dealing with ChatGPT and other generative AI tools? Some schools systems are blocking access, others are scrambling to set up guidelines. How do COPPA, FERPA, state laws, and laws in various countries set rules around this? What are your tips for schools? Block, allow, what restrictions? The biggest issue is that generally schools need contracts with 3rd party services - contracts that strictly control how data can be used on behalf of the school and the student. The first question my students asked Claude.ai today was "Is God real?" While the answer wasn't fulfilling for them, we should he talking more about the kinds of conversations young people are having with this technology, where their queries are stored, if they are used to train the models and what to do when they a) misunderstand how these tools work b) run into AI hallucinations. I also modeled how to organize your conversations and keep them separate to keep them more focused and effective. Modeled is the operative word. Claude's terms state you must be 18 to use it. They huddled around the board and typed in their questions into my account. How are we protecting student privacy while also teaching them how to use these tools responsibly and effectively? They are using them outside of school already. Lastly, how are we showing them how to use these tools as thought partners to learn and improve their understanding and productivity? I'm wondering how my colleagues will react to me opening this bag of worms but young people need guidance that doesn't come from block and ignore.

With so much being said about generative AI this is worth reading. It is being taken seriously and there are positive positions as well as expressing concerns about its use. As a Chess Master I have seen first hand the power of Computing in Chess to aid education. We also have seen in the Chess Community engines and AI's reduce human understanding to an average 'best effort' as its efficiency in tuning algorithms has accelerated at an exponential rate to create pure excellence- relevant to human chess learning. I was one of the first chess authors to use, embrace and promote chess engine assessments in books and chess products and now some 14 years later it's usage has become completely normalised. Chess Engines and AIs have become a normal part of the learning of all strong Chess Masters and of chess hobby players. The UK Governement now need to train it's population for emerging threats from AI and the people who will harnness it for both good and not so good. In 2015 I was given a substantial bursary to train as one of the first UK Computer Science Teachers in the country and it is a great pleasure and responsibility to help guide, train and instill computational and ethical thinking into our younger generation. The AI genie is out of the bottle and our societies and individual nations now have to educate and cooperate within a very ethical framework and its people HAVE to ensure that it is used for good and I would like to see a Global Ethical Organisation with teeth, that can have the input and to ensure AI is used ethically and fairly for all of our ecelctic mixture of humans, our diversity, our differences and our uniqueness. it will take a lot of people power to create Ethical Oversight Organisations and I hope their will be International cooperation especially with the more powerful nations.
