Does Your Organization Put Security First? Many organizations do not – even if they think they do. What does that mean? Let’s take ransomware. When we ask companies “How are you protecting your systems and networks from ransomware” – many times the response we get is “backups.” Relying on backup files to restore operations and save customer and sensitive data in the event of an attack is short-sighted at best – business-ending at worst. - When were your backups last “backed up”? - What if the backups are also compromised in an attack? - What was the dwell time of the attackers and are you sure that no data was compromised? Ransomware is an ever-changing, versatile threat perpetrated by sophisticated RaaS groups whose goal is to infiltrate systems so deeply that backup and recovery without their assistance is virtually impossible. So how do you fight these attacks? Boards and executive management need to listen to their CISOs and fund their requested security projects. The Cl0p ransomware group has compromised 1079 organization affecting 49-54 million individuals as of 8/31 per KonBriefing Research. Ransomware is a business, supported by adequate funding, technology resources and infrastructure, personnel, and affiliates to scale their businesses. Like any business, ransomware groups must make money. Knowing how these groups make money helps inform security and business leadership on how to protect, disrupt, and minimize damage from ransomware. How do ransomware groups make money? 1) Force us into paying so we can unlock our encrypted data. 2) Force us to pay so they won't publicly post our sensitive data. 3) Force us to pay to not sell our data to competitors. What can we do to protect our businesses, data, and public image in the face ransomware? 1) Backup your critical data to immutable, offline, or air gapped systems and routinely restore your critical business environments and data. This will minimize the downtime and subsequent impact to your businesses if a critical business environment is effected. 2) Encrypt your critical data. If your data is encrypted, it can be unreadable if taken which makes it worthless to outside parties. 3) Segment your critical systems and highly restrict access to those systems following zero trust approaches. System segmentation will limit the blast radius while restricting access will greatly reduce the likelihood of a successful attack and give your defenders a smaller subset of access avenues to monitor. 4) Quickly deploy security patches, especially on Internet facing systems. If patches for zero-day vulnerabilities are unavailable, consider alternative mitigations including taking the system offline. 5) Aggressively hunt for threats within your critical business environments paying close attention to suspicious egress traffic. The five strategies above are not fully inclusive but go a long way in protecting your business from being materially affected by a ransomware attack. By better protecting our businesses we can reduce the amount of money paid to ransomware groups as well as reduce the spend needed to recover from a ransomware attack. #informationsecurity #cybersecurity #leadership #riskmanagement #business #zerotrust

"Municipalities make for the perfect victim" a recent Dark Reading article states. The lack of IT funding, limited cybersecurity training, and outdated security tools and protocols all contribute to a staggering rise 📈 on ransomware attacks within municipalities. According to a Sophos study on ransomware attacks, "the rate of ransomware attacks in state and local government has increased from 58% to 69% year-over-year, contrary to the global cross-sector trend, which has remained constant at 66% in our 2023 and 2022 surveys." This trend holds true, not just for municipalities, but across industries. Bouncing back from a ransomware is costly and difficult.
