🌟 Embracing Wholeness in the Workplace 🌟 In the pursuit of a life of alignment (which 2023 has offered me MANY opportunities to practice), I've reflected on the conventional wisdom of compartmentalizing work and home. The notion of leaving personal matters at the doorstep of the office and vice versa has long been touted. However, let's face it—we're not robots, and life isn't a set of programs to be switched on and off at will. As whole individuals, our fears, worries, and personal challenges tag along, impacting both our professional and personal spheres. In the face of workplace stress and economic uncertainties, these challenges don't magically stay confined to the office—they come home with us. The expectation for individuals to amputate parts of themselves during work hours is not only impractical but also outdated. Particularly in the wake of the pandemic, where remote work has become the norm, the boundaries between work and home have become even more blurred. Looking ahead, I believe the winning companies will be those that acknowledge and celebrate the entirety of their employees. It's not about fitting people into tidy boxes; it's about creating an environment where individuals are not only given permission but actively encouraged to bring their whole selves to work. In the coming years, successful companies will be those that support their employees in their roles as parents, caregivers, and multifaceted individuals. Providing resources to help maintain a healthy balance and fulfilling lives will be key to fostering a workplace where everyone can thrive. 10 years ago, I was coaching Boomers and Gen Xers to improve intergenerational communications and embrace new perspectives from Millennials on having meaningful, purposeful careers. For the next 10, I'll build bridges for Gen Z (and Alpha). They're the first fully-online cohort, had a global pandemic in their formative years, and like Gen X, has watched massive waves of layoffs and workplace burnout. No matter how "salty" older workers may be, the younger are pushing hard to break the behaviors that created workaholism and toxic workplaces. Being happy at work isn’t just a win for employees; it’s also a win for employers. Research shows a causal link between happy workers and a 13% increase in productivity. On the flipside, unhappiness at work costs the world $7.8 trillion in lost productivity, equal to 11% of global GDP. But too many of us are disconnected, disengaged, and bored at work. 50% of the global workforce is quiet quitting and 18 percent are loud quitting – sharing openly that they are unhappy at work. Social media trends like #QuietQuitting and #ActYourWage have reached over 1.2 billion views and their virality confirms that we’re all still feeling the effects of chronic stress and burnout from the pandemic. Obviously, the current state of workforce unhappiness is a big problem to solve. Happiness at work has to come from a deeper, more intrinsic connection to why we’re there. A culture of autonomy, belonging, and purpose comes from a shared vision, and right now, it’s fair to say that many companies and their employees are simply not seeing eye-to-eye.
