Responsibilities

GENERAL PURPOSE:

With a high level of independent judgement and self-direction, facilitate the continued growth, accessibility, and secure use of the University of Rochester Medical Center archives. In addition to assisting the Curator with managing daily operations of the History of Medicine department, this role bears primary responsibility for the accession, arrangement, and description of archival collections, and the transformation of current archival finding aids from legacy formats to Encoded Archival Description, or interoperable metadata standards which may be used to make our collections discoverable in local and national discovery environments.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The accession, arrangement, and description of physical, digital, and born-digital URMC archival collections in accordance with accepted archival standards.
  • Transform current archival finding aids from non-networked records to Encoded Archival Description, or interoperable metadata which may be used to make our collections discoverable in local and national discovery environments
  • Coordinate with University Libraries Digital Initiatives staff on the migration of metadata into ArchivesSpace, the Libraries’ archival asset discovery system; and providing support to ongoing generation and implementation of Libraries’ digital preservation measures.
  • Provides in-person and virtual expert reference and research assistance to faculty, students, staff, and external users while adhering to handling and security protocols.
  • Participate in collections management and control activities, including collections assessment, stacks maintenance, coordinating preservation and reformatting activities with appropriate library departments, and collecting workflow, use, and other statistics about the collections.
  • Contributes to development of policies, procedures, and workflows of day-to-day operations in the department, including research services, reference, instruction, acquisitions, cataloging, and reproductions. Works to ensure seamless experiences for users and staff.
  • Collaborate with curator, faculty, and students to design and mount exhibits.
  • Develops relationships with faculty that foster the integration of archives, rare books, and special collections into teaching and research.
  • May supervise staff, students, or interns in the completion of short and long-term projects.
  • Develops relationships with donors, alumni, community members, and stakeholders for the ongoing stewardship of collections.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree from ALA-accredited program with archival coursework or advanced degree in an allied discipline with relevant experience required.
  • 3-5 years of experience working in archives and/or special collections
  • Experience with ArchivesSpace or other archival collections management systems required.
  • Experience providing reference service in archives or special collections required.
  • or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Knowledge of archival theory and practice as well as principles of preservation required.
  • Strong knowledge of DACS and EAD archival descriptive standards and awareness of current trends in the digitization of archival materials for access and preservation required.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities & work effectively, both independently & collaboratively, in a dynamic environment with a diverse group of staff & patrons required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written, & oral communication skills. Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, & a commitment to professional engagement & continuous learning required.
  • A background in the history of western medicine preferred.
  • Bibliographic proficiency with one or more languages other than English preferred.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $60,431 - $84,603 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
