This is a Limited Duration opportunity that is intended to last for 12 months from the date of hire.

The Salem Public Library is seeking enthusiastic and highly collaborative individuals, whose main objective is to deliver exceptional customer service and diverse programming. We have two (2) limited duration Librarian positions, one Librarian will support the Youth Services, and one Librarian will support the Adult Services team. This assignment will end June 28, 2025.

 

Librarians design and present engaging community programs, build and sustain strong connections with staff, patrons, and the community, and continuously deliver customer service. In addition to fostering a love of reading by promoting access to ideas and information, our mission is to engage all of Salem in lifelong learning, accessing information, and making meaningful connections. What you will do: 

The limited duration Librarians will plan, conduct, and evaluate youth and/or adult programs in collaboration with coworkers. This role will need the ability to support and further our objectives outlined in the Library Strategic Plan. This position works under the direction of the general supervisor and supervision of other employees is not a responsibility.

Additional information on job responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage projects and project teams in their capacity as leaders within their work groups.
  • Work directly with the public providing excellent reference and information support at our customer service desks.
  • Assist staff in conflict with challenging and unwanted patron behavior.
  • Interacting daily with members of the public to deliver library services and provide information in person at a variety of service desks, and via phone and email.
  • Instructing patrons in use of various library systems and resources, such as the internet, Dewey Decimal system, indexes, databases, printers, software programs, network programs, etc. by providing guidance, directions, and technical expertise.
  • Answering basic questions about Library policies, facilities, and resources and explaining Library rules and procedures by phone and in person. 
  • Preparing reports and maintaining records related to library activities.
  • May supervise volunteers.
  • Assistance with building safety and security by reporting concerns and being aware of surroundings.
  • Manage assigned area of Library collection including selection, evaluation, and maintenance of library materials and other resources according to local policies and industry standards.
  • Performing all work of lower library assignments as needed.

  • The position schedule is Tuesday - Saturday (working one evening per week). May on occasion work at the West Salem Library located at 476 Glen Creek Rd. NW, Salem, OR 97304.

 

What are the minimum qualifications?

  • Must pass the pre-employment background check and drug test (including marijuana).
  • Must have reliable transportation to be able to report to/from work sites, events, trainings, and meetings.
  • A college degree from an accredited college or university in a related field to program assignment (i.e., library science, business management, hospitality, social work, psychology, etc.), and some work experience related specifically to libraries or a combination of education, experience, and/or training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions.

Preferred Qualifications (Not required to apply):

  • A Master’s Degree in Library and/or Information Science from an accredited university.
  • Bilingual skills in Spanish (speaking, reading, and writing) preferred.
