Job Description:

The role of the Investment Associate entails assisting the scouting and vetting of ocean impact startup investments, conducting due diligence analysis, creating financial modeling and projections, tracking company growth and impact, executing the investment process, some strategy work, and proposing investment deals to the SOA Investment Committee and Seabird Ventures. The role also involves developing and nurturing relationships with other ocean impact investors/accelerators/partners to expand SOA's presence within the ecosystem. Involves regular check-ins with portfolio company CEOs and monitoring the timing and details of upcoming company investment rounds. The position also involves analyzing industries and trends relevant to ocean impact investments, as well as supporting the accounting and operations related to deploying impact investments. The Associate may also support fundraising efforts as needed for future investment vehicles. Reporting to the Director of Investments with oversight from the Chief Impact and Investments Officer. This role is based out of San Francisco, CA.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists with scouting and vetting of new prospective ocean impact startup investments that support SOA’s mission
  • Supports SOA’s investment process by performing investment due diligence on dozens of companies, including business, financial, and impact diligence, and communicates findings through investment analyses and/or weekly presentations
  • Tracks the performance and next investment rounds of one of the largest portfolios of ocean health investments. Creates financial modeling of investment performance
  • Develops and fosters relationships with other ocean partners and expands SOA’s presence in the ocean investment ecosystem
  • Supports SOA’s investment teams in managing relationships with SOA’s investors and sponsors, by producing quarterly reports on investment performance and updates from portfolio companies.
  • Prepares analyses relevant to ocean impact investments to guide the investment strategy, including thesis creation, market maps, industry research
  • Facilitate network building through proactive interactions with promising entrepreneurs
  • Support accounting and operations related to SOA and Seabird Ventures investments
  • Some travel domestic or international to ocean conferences may be required
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in economics, environmental studies, sustainable finance, environmental engineering, oceanography, marine biology; an MBA or Master’s is preferred, and financial certifications like a CFA is a most desirable scenario
  • 2-3 years of experience in venture capital, private equity, sustainable startups, incubators/accelerators, consulting, or impact investing, preferably with exposure to the ocean or climate sectors
  • Strong analytical and financial performance modeling skills (calculating IRR, MOIC, company revenue projections, and exit scenarios using the VC method), interview process may request a case study
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, possibility for supporting investor and startup events working with the Ecopreneur Network (EN) team
  • Experience with organizational tools like Airtable, Google presentations, Excel, Word, Docusign, Slack and Gusto
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders in the impact investing field from startup CEOs, LPs, co-investors, partners, and donors

  • Fluent in SOA's ocean solution sectors: decarbonization, pollution reduction, ecosystem restoration, blue foods, ocean data and research.
  • Knowledge of ocean science and ocean-related environmental challenges as well as how to measure and track the impact of ocean health solutions
  • Strong project management skills and time management skills; able to handle multiple tasks and new tasks simultaneously
  • A ‘yes and’ attitude toward taking on assignments, problem solving, and launching new initiatives. Some creativity and ability to take initiative toward improving tools/workflow and organizational efficiencies
  • Curiosity-first mindset toward people, innovations, and organizations
  • Collaborative both internally and externally and looking to expand your professional network
  • Strong commitment to SOA’s mission and values to develop innovative solutions to restore the health of our ocean within our lifetime

Salary: $65,000 - $70,000 USD Annually
