The Apollo has played a major role in the emergence of jazz, swing, bebop, R&B, gospel, blues, and soul — all quintessentially American music genres. Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Sammy Davis Jr., James Brown, Gladys Knight, Luther Vandross, D’Angelo, Lauryn Hill, and countless others began their road to stardom on the Apollo stage. Today, The Apollo is a respected nonprofit presenting concerts, theatrical and dance performances, film screenings, educational programs, and community outreach programs.

Founded in 1991, The Apollo Theater Foundation, Inc. is dedicated to the preservation and development of the legendary Apollo Theater through the Apollo Experience of world-class live performances and education programs that:

  • Honor the influence and advance the contributions of African American artists
  • Advance emerging creative voices across cultural and artistic media

Job Summary:

The Human Resources Director will oversee all aspects of human resources practices, policies, and processes for the organization, with the organization’s effective operations and the employees’ engagement and well-being as key metrics. This position manages recruitment, employee relations, performance management, compliance, workforce planning, and organizational development. The HR Director will work closely with the President and other members of senior leadership to ensure that the theater's HR strategies align with its mission, vision, and operational goals.

Key Responsibilities:

Recruitment and Staffing:

  • Develop and implement recruitment strategies to attract top talent for staff positions
  • Oversee the hiring process, including job postings, candidate screening, interviewing, and onboarding
  • Ensure a diverse and inclusive hiring process that aligns with the theater's commitment to equity and inclusion
  • Coordinate with leaders on appropriate staffing levels for productions

Employee Relations:

  • Serve as a point of contact for employee concerns and inquiries
  • Foster a positive work environment through effective conflict resolution and employee engagement initiatives
  • Implement programs to enhance employee morale and job satisfaction

Performance Management:

  • Develop and oversee performance appraisal systems
  • Work with managers to set performance goals and provide regular feedback
  • Implement training and development programs to support employee growth and career advancement

Compliance and Policies:

  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations
  • Develop, implement, and update HR policies and procedures
  • Manage employee records and maintain confidentiality

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Oversee the administration of employee benefits programs, and manage the external vendors
  • Conduct salary surveys and market analysis to ensure competitive compensation
  • Develop and manage employee wellness programs

Organizational Development:

  • Work with leadership to develop and implement strategic HR initiatives
  • Lead efforts to build and maintain a culture that reflects the theater's values and mission
  • Support organizational change and development efforts

Training and Development:

  • Identify training needs and coordinate professional development opportunities
  • Design and implement training programs to enhance skills and knowledge
  • Support leadership development and career pathing efforts

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field (Master's degree preferred)
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in human resources management, preferably in a non-profit or arts-related organization
  • Strong knowledge of HR laws and regulations
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proven ability to manage and resolve conflicts
  • Experience in developing and implementing HR policies and programs
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a theater or performing arts environment
  • Familiarity with non-profit management
  • Union relations experience

Salary:

$120,000.00 – $140,000.00 per year
