Director of Regulatory & Compliance

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Director of Regulatory & Compliance to focus on regulatory and space, including ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations), EAR (Export Administration Regulations), FCC (Federal Communications Commission), and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) for satellite licensing and regulation. The ideal candidate will also have substantial experience with government contracting, including FAR and DFARS. The right candidate will possess excellent analytical skills and a deep understanding of the complexities inherent in navigating international and domestic laws governing aerospace, defense, communications, and related industries. Prior space or defense industry experience desired.

Please note that while there is a strong preference for this position to be located in Denver, CO, we are open to candidates in the United States outside of Denver.

What you'll do:

  • Ensure the company's activities adhere to all applicable regulations. Develop, implement, and oversee compliance programs to mitigate risk and ensure adherence to legal requirements
  • Conduct in-depth analysis and interpretation of various filings, documentation or technology to provide accurate and timely legal advice to internal stakeholders. Stay updated on changes in relevant laws and regulations and assess their impact on the company's operations
  • Review, draft, and negotiate contracts, agreements, and licenses in a range of areas including aerospace, defense, telecommunications, and space activities, and ensure compliance with ITAR, EAR, FCC, FAR, DFARS, and any other relevant regulations or licensing requirements
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for interactions with government agencies. Represent the company in discussions, inquiries, and audits related to compliance
  • Identify potential legal and compliance risks and develop strategies to mitigate these risks effectively. Provide guidance and training to internal teams on compliance best practices
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement internal policies, procedures, and controls that align with regulatory requirements and industry standards
  • Lead all regulatory applications and periodic maintenance/reporting for the company's satellite based activities

What you bring:

  • Minimum of 10 years experience with regulatory and compliance work in space / government .
  • Deep understanding of international trade controls, export compliance, telecommunications law, and space-related legal frameworks.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex regulations and provide practical guidance to internal stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate across departments, brief senior leaders, and interact with government agencies.
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing compliance programs and policies.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Direct experience with compliance in development ITAR-controlled technologies.
  • Direct experience with satellite and ground station licensing via FCC.
  • Bonus: Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
