Macdonald & Company is once again, proudly partnered with their client, a lean and rapidly growing residential real estate finance and asset management company to appoint a Controller to their team in Charlotte, North Carolina. Our client is backed by relationships with several large (multi-billion-dollar) private equity groups.


The ideal candidate will have the opportunity to be an integral part of a growing team in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial work environment with interactions with clients, attorneys, asset management team and direct reporting lines to top-senior leadership. This individual will be involved in several facets of the operations including asset management, general ledger/accounting, tax, loan closings, lot sales, partial releases, loan payoffs, and loan servicing,


Primary Responsibilities

Detail-oriented certified public accountant with knowledge and experience in the real estate lending industry to perform day to day accounting and tax responsibilities, oversight of loan servicing activities, loan closings, review loan agreements, review borrower financial statements and covenant requirements, monitor borrower projections for potential covenant violations, oversee partial release paydown letters, payoff letters, and borrower sale activities and collateral releases.


To ensure success as a real estate/lender professional, you should demonstrate solid knowledge of our client's lending process and procedures and have experience in a similar role. An outstanding real estate/lender controller will be someone whose expertise contributes to the timely and accurate monitoring of our client's loan portfolio as well as the accounting and tax processes.


Responsibilities include:

Loan Servicing

  • Review Borrower bank statements, financial statements and covenant compliance certificates.
  • Review loan Set up in the System upon Closing of a new loan, ensure all terms are set up correctly and match documents.
  • Oversee Paralegal Closing Coordinator through the closing process.
  • Review borrower interest calculations and projections monthly
  • Prepare partial loan paydown letters, payoff letters, and release of collateral
  • Coordinate preparation of loan documents with Lender Legal Counsel and review.
  • Coordinate and review Tri-party Agreement with Borrower and Builder Partner.
  • Communicate anticipated sales and paydowns with equity group
  • Coordinate Loan Amendments as needed
  • Keep electronic files organized and filed currently in Egnyte data storage folders.
  • Prepare Lender Closing Invoice and Review and Approve HUD Closing Statements.
  • Facilitate communications and keep deal team, borrower, and private equity team updated on status throughout the closing process, and timing of the closing.
  • Coordinate with Treasury group for funding initial loan proceeds at closing.
  • Prepare default letters, reservation of rights letters, and other communications as required.


Accounting and Tax

  • Oversee Monthly Invoicing/Billing Process
  • Oversee Accounts Payable Process
  • Year-End Reporting, including 1099’s.
  • Monthly financial statement preparation and review.
  • Quarterly Tax estimates
  • Ensure State filing requirements and obligations are met


General comments

Candidate must have excellent collaboration and communication abilities, and a keen attention to detail. Candidate must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, have extensive knowledge of real estate loan documents, and have superb organizational, time management, and multi-tasking skills. The candidate must be self-motivated and able to prioritize tasks.


Qualifications

  • B.S. Degree in Accounting
  • CPA Certificate
  • Candidates should possess a minimum of 1-2 years of public accounting experience in audit, and a minimum of 5 years of experience in the real estate lending industry
