POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Advancement & Communications Officer oversees the functions and overall success of Optimist Youth Homes & Family Services’ Development Department. The Department’s functions include: developing donor stewardship, cultivation and segmentation strategies; managing the institutional giving portfolio; producing fundraising events; creating and tracking department budgets; managing the organization’s social media outlets and overall public relations for the agency; and ensuring extraordinary customer service to prospects, donors, staff, Board, Optimist Clubs, event participants, contracting agencies, and volunteers. The Chief Advancement & Communications Officer also acts as a primary development liaison to the Optimist Youth Homes Board of Directors and its Resource Development Committee.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Strategy Development

  • Develops and implements Optimist Youth Homes’ comprehensive Strategic Plan for Development, in conjunction with the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Plans, leads and directs the agency’s overall development efforts to achieve annual fundraising goals in keeping with the organization’s values, mission, vision and plans.
  • In conjunction with the Chief Executive Officer and Grant Writer, manages the agency’s institutional giving portfolio and strategy, including creating, implementing and managing an overall strategy to acquire a diversified base of funding from foundations and corporations.
  • Works with the Chief Executive Officer to maintain and expand an effective Advisory Board.
  • Oversees and evaluates public relations and communications services, including social media platforms.
  • Supervises maintenance of agency website.

Donor Identification, Cultivation, and Acquisition

  • Represents the agency, its Board and executive team to donors, prospects, Optimist Clubs, community members, and fundraising volunteers.
  • Oversees, coordinates activities and serves as the staff liaison to the Optimist Professionals support group, including the planning and implementation of their annual Poker Night
  • Provides Agency support to Optimist Clubs and outside groups, as assigned.
  • Oversees the success of comprehensive individual donor efforts (mail, email and in- person) by preparing a master prospect list, creating specialized strategies, coordinating implementation efforts, managing donor portfolios, meeting deadlines and tracking results.
  • Manages major donor cultivation and solicitation by preparing detailed prospect profiles, cultivating relationships and building cohesive strategies in collaboration with the CEO and Board members.
  • Solicits contributions on behalf of the organization, individually and in cooperation with the support of executive management
  • Assures the design and implementation of cultivation, acknowledgment and recognition programs.
  • Oversees annual and special campaigns and fundraising events.
  • Serves as the agency’s Subject Matter Expert for resource development.
  • Oversees an employee giving program, collaborating with the Executive Team, to ensure a successful execution and reception
  • Provides donor development and gift solicitation support and training to the Board of Directors and the Advisory Board in the execution of short- and long-range cultivation efforts.
  • Identifies and leverages resources – including volunteers, staff, publications and the Internet – to identify linkages to, and interests of, major gift prospects.

Department Management

  • Manages the Development Department's professional and support personnel as well as volunteers; fosters a working environment that is rewarding to staff and volunteers.
  • Supervises, manages, trains and evaluates the Development Associate, Development Assistant, Graphic Designer, two Volunteer Coordinators (one off-site) and the Grant Writer.
  • Manages the Grant Writer to ensure a master calendar of grants submission; assists with foundation research; and ensures that grants efforts are consistent and compatible with other fundraising efforts.
  • Identifies, cultivates, recruits, and develops fundraising volunteers and leadership; trains, places, coordinates and supervises fundraising volunteers.
  • Processes and tracks department revenue and expenditure actuals against the Development Department budget. Ensures the proficient and uniform use of Raiser’s Edge, the agency’s donor development software.
  • Organizes direct solicitations, mail campaigns, planned giving solicitations and other such fundraising steps as designated by the CEO and the Board.
  • Responsible for the development of descriptive materials, including an agency newsletter that is distributed four times per year, and interpretive materials that will assist in the process of fundraising and public relations.
  • Coordinates all activities for the annual Mentor Awards Gala and utilizes the Development Team to execute those activities.

Qualifications

  • Minimum seven years of progressive experience in fundraising including, but not limited to, institutional giving for non-profit organizations with a proven track record meeting and exceeding fund development goals.
  • Minimum three years supervisory experience.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Master's degree is preferred.
  • CFRE certified or eligible.
  • Experience in child welfare and/or juvenile justice preferred, but not required.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated success establishing individual donor programs and closing substantial major gifts as a result of implemented strategies.
  • Experience managing and mentoring development staff.
  • Substantial experience working with a Board of Directors in development functions.
  • Substantial knowledge and experience with Los Angeles-based foundations and funders.
  • Excellent computer skills (minimum 55 wpm) with knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel primarily) and donor database systems. Experience with Raiser’s Edge or a similar donor database system preferred.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working on, and completing, multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Exercises initiative and independent judgment.
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with staff, donors, and grantors.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule as needed, to fulfill program needs which may include weekends, evening, and holidays.
  • Must possess a valid California driver's license and maintain an insurable driving record under Pacific Clinics' liability policy.
  • Must be able to pass criminal/fingerprinting background check, TB test, physical exam, and drug test.
  • Must be fully vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19.
  • Valid California driver’s license with a clear DMV record is a must.
  • Also requires bending, stooping, filing, lifting, and driving to various locations for development purposes.
  • All employees, regardless of position, serve as role models for children and adolescents who are served by our Agency. Therefore, each employee must at all times be emotionally stable and able to function effectively with children, adolescents and adults who may have mental or behavioral health problems. The staff must be able to demonstrate appropriate daily behavior, appropriate expression of emotions, as well as appropriate role modeling. Hostility, aggression and unnecessary or inappropriate physical actions as well as inappropriate emotional expression are not acceptable.

In accordance with CA law, the expected pay range for this CA position is posted with this position. The actual compensation may be determined based on bona fide factors such as education, experience, and other factors permitted by law.

Salary range for this position: $ 150,000.00 - $ 207,635.08 (annually)
