Background Painter [Animation Department]

THE THIRD FLOOR is the world’s leading visualization company with offices in Los Angeles and London as well as on location with productions around the world. Since 2004, the studio has helped clients visualize and maximize content by producing computer-animated blueprints, known as “previsualizations”. The Third Floor is a fun, creative company founded by artists, for artists. We work on extremely high-profile projects, while maintaining a small studio culture. The company has won multiple Emmy and VES awards for its work. Recent projects include Avatar: The Way of Water, House of the Dragon, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, For All Mankind, Masters of the Air, and many more.

The Third Floor is looking for an enthusiastic Background Painter who can create beautiful background paintings that seamlessly infuse our 3d and 2d worlds together. The ideal candidate would be able to take creative direction from both the director and art directors of the film, while also working with other departments to not only break down what is needed, but also to help solve technical issues that would come up. The candidate would also assist in implementing creative solutions that would optimize the workload that is needed, and work together with our outsourcing partners to streamline the process.

Full Time. Project based. Remote Position. Must be in the state of California, Georgia, Texas, Oregon, Connecticut, Florida, New Jersey, New York (Outside NYC), Colorado, Washington, or Canada for remote positions.

Responsibilities

• Create midground and background paintings for the film.
• Work with a team of artists in creating images that are consistent with the style of the film using drawovers, reference images, and verbal communication over zoom or other available programs.
• Work with assets, previs, comp, and lighting departments.
• Work with production to track the work that is involved and receive feedback as needed.
• Help production and pipeline in maintaining workflows and processes that make it easier for other artists to create images.
  
  

Essential Skills

• Knowledge of photoshop or other 2d painting software.
• Good understanding of creating images based on lighting within the scene or shot.
• Experience in lighting and comping.
• Familiarity with Shotgrid or other tracking software.
• Prior experience in working in a team of matte painters.
• Prior experience as a matte painter in a VFX or animated feature.
• General Basic Knowledge of 3D programs is a big plus.

The pay scale is between $30 - $70 / hour based on experience, skillset and other factors. Additional TTF benefits: Health Insurance (Medical, Dental, Vision), Sick Time, 401k (staff only), PTO (staff only), and additional Perks & Benefits.
