Organizational Profile

Black Spectrum Theatre Company started as the brainchild of multi-hyphenate talent Carl Clay (theatre producer-writer-film director-etc.) in 1970. Inspired by the theatre and film experiences of his youth, Clay first gathered artists and supporters in a church basement within his Queens, NY home base. The nascent company grew quickly and its productions were noted for boldness and a resonant connection to the social issues of the day. In 1986, Black Spectrum made the move to what would become its permanent home, a former Naval hospital Officer’s Club in the Roy Wilkins Family Center, part of the sprawling 54-acre Roy Wilkins Park in Southeastern Queens. Black Spectrum boasts an impressive record of production with over 350 theatrical productions, 25 films, 50 musical concerts and connection with up to 20,000 patrons on an annual basis. The company employs both professional and emerging artists in its production, all supported by a small and dedicated staff of full and part-time employees.
