“One of the things that gets me really fired up is thinking about complex societal systems. How and why they work the way they do, and how to redesign and improve them. Perry thinks about the world in the same way, and that's one of the first things that really got me excited about working with him. Perry understands complex systems. Together we worked on products with the potential to really change capitalism (and by extension change democracy, social justice, collective action, and much more). I needed to find a partner with fluency in many different areas: business, activism, consumer psychology, social change, marketing, technology, and so on. Perry is the first person I've found who is able to think about all of these areas so clearly that I found myself trusting his opinion and agreeing with nearly everything he said. He was a great person to lead our product development, not only because he's good with complexity, but he's also very strategic. He's a chess player, and he naturally brought lots of good strategy to the table. Good product management requires someone who can think several chess moves ahead, anticipating dependencies, risks and obstacles. As a startup CEO, deciding what Perry should be working on felt like standing in front of an all-you-can-eat grand buffet. The prudent thing might be to have Perry just do "product management". Or to have him just do "software development". But he has too many different skills. For an under-resourced startup, the temptation was too great, and I asked him to help with product management, coding, design, marketing and messaging, and more. Perry ended up with a very full plate, and his ability to juggle so many things made him extremely valuable to us. I only wish I could have freed up some more of his time for the big-picture thinking that he's so good at. Perry was a great, trusted sounding board for me. It was always great to sit down with him when I needed to hear an honest opinion, fearless feedback, or a moral compass. I know that Perry is going to change the world, and I suppose this is as good a venue as any to share that knowledge with all of you. He could easily get any number of normal jobs, but that's not what he was meant to do. He and I first started talking about working together after he read Martin Luther King Jr's autobiography. He doesn't think in terms of "jobs." He thinks in terms of "theories of change." I believe he's going to do very important work, and he's going to do it the right way. The world is lucky to have such a thoughtful and talented trailblazer helping to push humanity towards our best future.”
