The David and Goliath Problem: Imagine being a small business trying to compete in a market overflowing with venture-backed giants. These Goliaths have deep pockets, enabling aggressive marketing and pricing strategies. They dominate the landscape, ready to wage price wars, or invet in acquisition strategies with very long-term paybacks. It's a tough game for the smaller Davids. 2. The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing Issue: SaaS business model = higher valuation so keep your guard up. These wolves in sheep's clothing often rely heavily on manual processes or bespoke software, compromising scalability and profitability. Moreover, if a single product is propping up the whole business, there's a ticking time bomb of limited growth potential. 3. The One-Man Band Dilemma: A business overly dependent on key individuals is like a band led by a solo artist. What happens if the frontman exits, post-acquisition? The sweet music can quickly turn into a cacophony, disrupting performance and operations. 4. The All Eggs in One Basket Situation: High dependency on a few clients is risky. What sets off alarm bells in my head? 🫨 Hearing early-stage founders make statements like, “We have a consumer product and a business product.”  🚨 Or “We are expanding to four new vertical markets this year.”  🚨 Or “We’re going to light up our reseller channel now.”  I see a lot of startups on the other side of getting stuck and I can tell you lack of focus is a huge problem. I get it: Staying true to your core—the one thing you do well—is tricky when you feel the pressure to grow from investors or people you hired to grow the business.  What’s key is being in deep alignment with your board and team around the reality of the learning process and what really matters. Stay lean and disciplined until you have proven your “one thing” beyond a doubt. Every CRO and VP of Sales I know is obsessing over "efficiency" right now. 📈 ⚡ Definition: "How do I get my sales org performing or functioning in the best possible manner with the least waste of time and effort?" 🤔 The problem is they're optimizing every single part of their funnel and sales process EXCEPT for the part which matters most. How their sellers are showing up each day🧠 Data on how sellers are showing up in 2024: - 82% of sellers are stressed or highly stressed. - 70% of sellers struggle with mental health. - 70% of sellers are experiencing fatigue. - 69% of sellers have trouble sleeping. Time and effort will ALWAYS be wasted and "efficiency" will never be achieved, if your people are showing up in a 💩 state mentally and physically. The new episode of The Science of Scaling Podcast dropped today. In this episode, I speak with Ang McManamon the VP of Sales at Crunchbase. We dissect managing sales through a pivot, specifically how she managed the team as the market transitioned from one of the most bullish markets in tech in 2021 to one of the biggest down markets in tech in 2022. Example discussion points include: How to manage a board that is demanding an unrealistic revenue target? (1) Educate them on the current bottoms-up GTM model by showing them where the team has been performing on the key drivers of revenue outcomes over the past 2 quarters (i.e. the average productivity per rep (PPR), MQLs generated per month, average sales cycle and close rate on sales opportunities, etc.). We implement this framework with our portfolio companies Stage 2 Capital before issues like this even surface in order to establish the narrative from the beginning. (2) Illustrate where these metrics need to be to achieve the revenue outcomes they are demanding. Often this analysis yields the conclusion that the team would need to 2x PPR, MQL generating, and and close rates essentially overnight. Hopefully, they start to see how unrealistic the plan is and that the plan is going to lead to unnecessary burn and departures of top performers (3) Using the bottoms-up model, devise an aggressive but realistic plan that assumes say a 10%-20% Q/Q improvement in each of the performance drivers and the revenue outcomes that this performance would yield. (4) The board may ignore this line of thinking but at least we have educated them on the revenue mechanics and can use that framework to report back results at the next meeting. How to quantitatively assess whether a revenue miss is due to a macro condition, like the economy, or sales execution, like hiring and training the salespeople? An area few boards and leadership teams look at to conduct this diagnosis is the quarter-over-quarter performance of individual AEs, especially the consistent top performers on the team. If the company misses the target and you look under the hood and find that the historic consistent performers are still performing as usual and the miss was driven from AEs hired in the last year, we have a sales leadership execution issue. However, if we look under the hood and see that even the top performers' PPR decreased, perhaps at about the same time and about the same amount, then we have likely have a diagnosis outside of sales execution (i.e. economy, competition, product, etc.) Anyway, Ang is awesome and was completely open about this journey that so many leaders experienced over the past two years. If your solution requires behavior change of any amount, you require a top down selling motion. Why? Behavior change is too hard to do bottoms up. It just doesn’t work. A pretty large number of SaaS apps think that they can go middle up or bottoms up. Then they are frustrated that their “champion” or “power user” isn’t driving the change they want. If your solution requires change, get good at selling to the c-level.

True or False: You should scale sales quickly after achieving product-market fit? From my POV, this one’s false. Before you can scale your sales team, you need to spend some time in action with your customers. You need to learn from them, relieve friction, and craft repeatable GTM processes.
