Not sure about this, AI is going to be prolific, everybody needs to get involved, be a user, be responsible. Can be likened to DEI and even ESG. At Qualcomm our CIO is working closely with legal and then it is the functions who are responsible in finding the tools that they need and then working with IT and legal to make it happen. A stellar panel of editors provided great insights: - Aja Whitaker-Moore, Editor in Chief, Axios: GenAI can help with workflows, but we must distinguish from the commoditized content vs our top reporters/SMEs and what only they can deliver. - Cadie Thompson, Executive Editor of Business Insider: GenAI can digest meeting notes or news reports to receive a synopsis and determine if we should go deeper on particular stories. - Ryan Joe, Editor in Chief, ADWEEK: do not give these tools to junior reporters. They must first understand the journalism craft and how to effectively use Generative AI. - Francesca Barber, Executive Newsroom Director, POLITICO: lower the barrier of fear and skepticism to make the tech more accessible. Really good piece this on the lurking challenges for the technology that everyone’s talking about but many people don’t know what to do with. There’s about to be a huge bloodbath for VC-backed lightweight LLM wrappers. But also big questions for OpenAI’s business models. An Enterprise model for ChatGPT might be a thing, but that interface isn’t great for everyone and a lot of the value already freely exists in Bing.

I wrote a piece for Politico on major trends buffeting the media including artificial intelligence, deepfakes, and fighting disinformation in an age of dwindling resources. The conclusion is that founders, CEOs, politicians and others in the public eye now face an exponentially increasing threat of reputational damage. In today’s media landscape, a single negative review can quickly go viral, a poorly phrased statement can trigger a global backlash and an ill-judged joke can wreck careers. Life often moves at a frenetic pace. The last thing our readers want or need from us is a story that tells only a piece of a jumbled picture. I’ve long been a proponent of enterprise reporting: deeper stories about why things happen the way they do. During a Quad-City Times/Dispatch-Argus newsroom vision meeting last week, I identified different approaches to reporting that may help us better serve readers: 1. A higher percentage of enterprise stories 2. Swarming high-interest stories with follow ups 3. Providing clarity stories 4. Creating takeaways from dense reporting. Of these four, clarity stories are the least comfortable for many of us in the newsroom. We report each new development in an ongoing issue, so we don’t see the need to retell the larger story from those already-reported parts. There’s a misguided assumption that readers should be up to speed on our previous reporting. That’s where the “clarity” comes in. Sometimes we need to step back with fresh eyes and tell the whole story in a concise or narrative format, with the result being readers who understand what happened and why.

For the first time in at least a billion years, two lifeforms have merged into a single organism. The process, called primary endosymbiosis, has only happened twice in the history of the Earth, with the first time giving rise to all complex life as we know it through mitochondria. The second time that it happened saw the emergence of plants. Now, an international team of scientists have observed the evolutionary event happening between a species of algae commonly found in the ocean and a bacterium. The process involves the #algae engulfing the #bacterium and providing it with nutrients, energy and protection in return for functions that it could not previously perform – in this instance, the ability to “fix” nitrogen from the air.
