    A system and a method are disclosed for transmitting and receiving wireless signals in a shared communication channel while efficiently identifying the source of the transmission. Embodiments include sending, by a client device, a request to connect with a base station and receiving, in response to the request, a message including a radio transmission slot. The radio transmission slot identifies a frequency channel and a time slot for transmitting a wireless signal. The client device can then transmit wireless signals using the frequency channel identified by the radio transmission slot during the time slot identified by the radio transmission slot. When needed, the base station issues the same radio transmission slot to multiple client devices, in addition a message is sent to the client device including a short digital identifier. Every client device optionally transmits wireless signals during assigned radio transmission slots and additionally transmits the assigned digital identifier. The base station uses the digital identifier in conjunction with the radio transmission slot to efficiently deduce the identity of the client device.
