You’re looking to hire a marketing agency. How do you know which one will deliver the best results?
The truth, albeit a hard truth, is that you don't know until you hire them. Hiring an agency is a crapshoot. Period. You can do several things on the front end to mitigate your concerns, and set you up for success...but there's still no way of knowing who will get the best results until you're in it together. Ask peers you respect for recommendations. Back channel references rather than asking the agency for them. If possible, start with a project or small engagement to 'try' before you 'buy' to a degree. And finally, invest a ton of time energy into the relationship, especially at the beginning.

What do you do if your client relationship in advertising fails?
Open dialogue is the only thing to do once there is any sort of breakdown in the client <> agency reletionship. You should seek to, humbly, understand and listen to the client. Whether you agree or disagree is irrelevant. If whatever occurred is beyond repair, you should off board as gracefully and excitedly as you onboarded them, and seek to earn back the trust, and the business, in the future.
