The games industry layoff situation has been really rough for the past 2 years. While many of us are currently job hunting, I decided to spin up an indie game using Unreal Engine 5 to stay sharp and play around in areas of the engine I haven't touched in a long time with a small group of folks. Git and Unreal haven't really played well together in the past, so I figured I'd give it a new try. There are a dazzling array of tech stack solutions out there, and GitHub, while being very popular, doesn't lend itself well to Unreal projects containing a lot of binary data which can blow the smaller repo limits quite easily. I found a solution that is free for 250GB and 5 users (additional users are $6/month) using Azure DevOps (ADO). There are a number of convenience services out there that will set this up for you, but the monthly fees can be pretty high. In order to help others out there, I wrote a guide on how anyone can do the same thing and of course, this isn't Unreal specific, but it is Git specific! On my google drive: https://lnkd.in/g8PygEem If this helps just one person out there get started on their own indie project, I'll be happy. Comments are enabled, so feel free to ask questions or point out errors. I mainly went through a path of least resistance journey. Git is so nice, I have missed you!

I've worked with Shaan at two consecutive companies: Ascendant Studios, then Phoenix Labs. He's quite talented with gameplay systems and Unreal Engine 5. Good teammate, and this guy knows things with his extensive network of gaming press buddies. He's in a unique position of truly understanding what makes games tick. We may be spreading out into the winds, but if I get a chance, I'd hire Shaan back in a heartbeat!
Still processing it all, but yes, I've been laid off yet again. This is, believe it or not, the fourth layoff I've experienced in the last year (two of those were full-time game dev jobs, and two were from side gigs I did in games media). Anywho, if anyone is looking for an experienced software/gameplay engineer with over 2 years of Unreal Engine 5 experience and multiple shipped games, please reach out!

I've worked with Jose on two different teams. Minecraft Legends at BBI (5 years), and our unannounced project at Phoenix Labs (<1 year) which just got canceled. The team and project were really good! As for Jose, he always maintains a positive attitude, asks great questions, writes excellent code while also having strong knowledge on ECS (entity component systems). Takes the time to mentor folks and is helpful whenever you run into trouble. He would make for a great lead or TD. He's got the right qualities to do well with those.
Hi LinkedIn friends! Along with many other talented Lobsters, I was unfortunately impacted by the recent layoffs at Phoenix Labs. I had an incredible time working with my team at Phoenix and wish for all of them to land on their feet for the next exciting step of their careers. I’ve been professionally making games for 18 years and I absolutely love it. It all really started in high school for me, when I borrowed that ridiculously thick C++ book from the library and went on to code my first game ever. I’ve loved this journey and want to continue on it either as an individual contributor or as a team leader. My biggest passion has always been gameplay. In my eyes, it’s really what makes or breaks a good game but I also have skills that map well to tool development. I know that an effective team makes a better game and that’s where I draw my inspiration to pour my time into delightful workflows. My favourite genre to both play and work on is action games with RPG elements. I love good storytelling, relatable characters and gripping single or multiplayer mechanics. I know it’s a tough time for all of us in the industry. Some have managed to hold on to secure jobs and many of us are looking. While I’m joining the latter, I remain positive and hopeful that it’s taking me to a better place, where I’ll be able to fully express my creativity. I wish for everyone who is searching for that dream job to get closer and closer to finding it! Feel free to interact with this post or to DM me if you’d like to get in touch.

I've made a gameography. Here's everything I've worked on since entering the industry in Feb 1997. Doesn't include the project I was working on at Phoenix Labs that just got canceled yesterday.

Thank you Andrew for everything you've done and continuing to do! To everyone else reading this, just know that Phoenix Labs uses Unreal Engine 5 for most if not all projects. The teams skew much more heavily on the senior/principal side of the fence. Not very many juniors or mid level folks. There was a tremendous amount of skill and expertise within the teams. So this is a great batch of folks to consider.
A promise unfulfilled; that's the best way I can describe the overall feeling I have this morning, beyond the pure sadness of seeing so many great people out of work. We all joined Phoenix Labs to make games that bring people together, but to do that within an environment which would help move the industry forward and away from common issues that plague many studios. Our teams did their part - the games were beautiful and fun, and the teams were productive, happy and healthy, but sadly the business side of things tripped us up. For now, I'm focused on helping to connect all of these absolutely wonderful humans (truly, outside of being great developers and teammates, they are just actually GOOD people) to new opportunities. The list will continue to grow, so please check back frequently as more and more people will opt-in over time. Please reach out to me at aglover@phxlabs.ca or DM me, happy to chat with anyone and/or provide more information as needed. https://lnkd.in/gZCYZefi

I spotted Homeworld 3's mothership in the skies of Vancouver during the solar storm. I played early access over the weekend and thoroughly enjoying it. Lots of diverse campaign missions. Ambushing an incoming warp gate, getting through a deadly asteroid field, and so forth. Absolutely stunning graphics. Best of luck with this morning's launch. The skies are a sign! Btw, the collection edition is not messing around. Mothership model is spectacular with lights and sound and option for vertical or horizontal mount. How will you fly your ship? The game lets you choose so everyone wins! PS: Don't use vertical in the asteroid field mission. After I complete the campaign, I'll be checking out the rogue-like game mode. #homeworld3 #bbi

Learned about a new game announcement showcase called Triple-I initiative. Guessing I stands for Indie that streamed this morning. Loved the format and nice to just get straight to the new games. https://lnkd.in/gg-BitZ2 Which games were your favorites? For me it was these two: Laysara: Summit Kingdom (city builder) https://lnkd.in/ggMEp2au V Rising Castlevania DLC https://lnkd.in/gDCxM-6S Also a special shout out for Final Factory which launched yesterday (not part of triple-i). But my kind of automation game! https://lnkd.in/gRVCZP-A
