Here at New 42, we are committed to ensuring everyone is seen and celebrated for who they are. To commemorate Pride Month, our fun committee organized a fun party full of rainbow snacks and music from LGBTQ+ artists. Thank you to everyone who helped put the event together!

Today on “My First Years at New 42,” hear from VP of Development, Elizabeth Cashour. "In 2018, I started working at the New 42 as VP of Development. My new job required me to move back to NYC after living in California for 25 years, and I looked forward to the major upheaval in my life. It was exciting to return to NY to raise money for the arts, especially arts for children at a historic theater in the middle of Times Square. Times Square was quite a different place from when I left the city in 1993 – the New Victory would not be built until 1995! In the late ‘80’s, while working with Cora Cahan, the founder of the Joyce Theater, I wrote a proposal suggesting the Joyce help transform 42nd St. The proposal was not accepted, but it did put some things in motion and Cora was chosen to lead New 42. Cora was still the President/CEO in 2018. Sometimes life comes full circle in unexpected ways. Cora left New 42 in 2019 and was replaced by current President/CEO Russell Granet. I mention both of the CEO’s because it’s critical for the VP of Development to work closely with the head of the organization. They are the visionary source that drives the mission and people love to give to people who see a need and are brilliant at devising ways to fill it. Russell brought his own unique vision for New 42 and the New Victory Theater and enthusiastically shared ideas about how to move the organization forward in service to all New Yorkers, but especially those kids and families who may not have thought the New Victory was for them. No one could have imagined what 2020 would bring, as the world was thrown into chaos by a global pandemic that would shutter theaters and businesses. It ushered in a strange, solitary life of remote work and an exodus of people from NY. Everyone was anxious to find a path through what we thought might last a month, then a few months, and eventually a few years – at least until the worst was over. Even at the very onset, we knew we needed to keep the New Victory alive and we needed to help families through this difficult time. As the schools closed down on March 13, 2020, under Russell’s leadership, the staff designed a new digital program called Arts Break which launched the following Monday with art activities for parents and children. The program caught on quickly and became a lifeline for parents and kids from the city, throughout the country and even in places around the world. It was during this period of shocking change – and the aftershocks that continue today – that I knew the people of New 42, as well as the people who support and are touched by New 42, will have the vision and strength to continue to transform 42nd St and to do so much more. After six and half years, I am leaving New 42 at the end of June for a new adventure and wish everyone the best. It's been an honor and a pleasure to work with you all!"

Thank you to all who attended and donated to New 42’s gala Celebrating Times Square! 🥳 Every corner of Times Square tells a story, and it was wonderful to honor the people and businesses that help this area flourish. We are so grateful to be part of the rich history of this neighborhood. All proceeds from this gala will benefit the innovative artistic, arts education and engagement programs of New 42 and New Victory.
