Tucked away in a forest on the outskirts of Seattle sits Enid Smith Becker's cozy, sun-filled art studio. There, the SAM Gallery artist creates semi-abstracted landscape paintings that capture a mood or an emotion. Becker begins each new artwork by searching through her source photographs, selecting a photo, and making a quick sketch. At her easel, she paints the background landscape first, then incorporates panels that overlap the landscape, offering multiple views of the same subject. She believes that art can remind people of their connection to the natural world and encourage them to protect the beaches and forests they love. Visit #SAMBlog to learn about Becker's artistic process in the latest installment of our "In the Studio" series and see her latest artworks in "Reveal" at SAM Gallery through Sunday, August 4. https://lnkd.in/gEsRjiNS

You know "American Gothic" (1930), but do you know "American Gothicware" (1972)? This series by Howard Kottler spoofs the well-known painting by Grant Wood. By placing a decal of the iconic image on four plates and adding his own twist to each one, Kottler expresses his subversive attitude toward American life. Each plate offers a visual confrontation of the original painting by Wood and with it mainstream American values. Visit #SAMBlog to read more about Kottler's Gothicware series, then get tickets to see all four plates for yourself in "Poke in the Eye: Art of the West Coast Counterculture" at SAM! https://lnkd.in/gt93_Trj

👀 There's a new addition to our Porcelain Room! Created by contemporary artist Diego Cibelli, "Fiori dei Miei Habiti / La Montagne Enchantée" is a site-specific response to the iconic room's evocative ceiling fresco, "The Triumph of Valor Over Time" (ca. 1757) by Giovanni Tiepolo. Learn more about this work and take an up-close look at its astonishingly intricate details now at SAM! https://lnkd.in/gXjFHhMd [📸 Alborz Kamalizad]

🌈 TWO WEEKS TO GO! With "Anida Yoeu Ali: Hybrid Skin, Mythical Presence" on view for only two more weeks at the Seattle Asian Art Museum, we're throwing it back to the beginning of June when Anida Yoeu Ali and her rainbow brigade of chadoras took to the streets to interact and engage with Seattleites across the city. In this reimagined iteration of "The Red Chador," titled "The Red Chador: Afterlife," Ali lead the chadoras in a dazzling procession that reclaimed the gaze of the Muslim woman from the rising threat of both Islamophobia and homophobia. Joining Ali for this performance were Selma Al-Aswad, Sabreen Akhter, Nisreen El-Saadoun, Hiba Jameel, Soraya Sultan Meer, and Yireidi Valencia-Martinez. Get an up-close look at Ali's dazzling sequined chadoras and more of her large-scale performance works through Sunday, July 7—reserve your tickets now! visitsam.org/ali
