We Move People Forward

About us

PRC is a new $30-million San Francisco nonprofit formed through the merger of Positive Resource Center, Baker Places, and AIDS Emergency Fund. Leveraging a 50-year legacy of community service, PRC is focused on ending homelessness and improving the quality of life in the City by removing social barriers to good health and financial stability. Through PRC’s uniquely integrated legal, social, and health services each year more than 5,000 people are building income, getting healthy, and staying housed. The mission of PRC is to help people affected by HIV/AIDS, substance use, or mental health issues better realize opportunities by providing integrated legal, social, and health services that address the broad range of social risk factors that impact wellness and limit potential.

The final week of Pride Month saw a flurry of activities in both our internal staff community and the San Francisco community at large. On Thursday, June 27, PRC staff gathered to “show their pride” at our Integrated Service Center. We flaunted our best outfits, decorated cupcakes to symbolize many of the LQBTQ+ flags, participated in flash makeup and face painting, and origami swan making. We also made a community art project reflective of our values and feelings about Community, Safety, Acceptance, Hope, and Resistance. On Friday, June 28, the PRC team participated in the Trans March Resource Fair at Dolores Park and the Trans March immediately afterwards. We received many heartfelt compliments from clients and community members alike on our sign-making tent at Trans March on Friday. Our bilingual staff in particular connected closely with several queer community members who were seeking immigration legal advocacy and support. Ambassadors in our Black Trans Initiative supported tabling efforts and facilitated a joyous, playful space with trans women of color to be in community and learn more about our services. Those who won our makeup bag raffle prizes were excited to have new products to play with, and many folks were highly interested in our drop-in computer lab hours! And to cap off the month on Sunday, more than a dozen staff marched in the San Francisco Pride Parade, one of the largest pride celebrations across the globe. We marched alongside the San Francisco Department of Public Health and other nonprofit service providers. We appreciate everyone at PRC contingent who for their commitment to allyship, connection, and joy within our own community and contributing to a citywide culture of inclusivity. #beaconoflove #sfpride #sfprideparade #sflgbtq

In delivering it's 6-3 decision in Grants Pass v. Johnson, the United States Supreme Court has effectively criminalized homelessness. In the wake of this shortsighted decision we must come together to reaffirm our basic human right to housing. More importantly, we must fix the broken systems that create and maintain homelessness and replace them with systems that center human life and dignity. Everyone deserves a permanent home to exist and thrive, and no person is criminal for having no other option than to sleep outside. #grantspassvjohnson #supremecourt #homelessness #housing

Today, the Supreme Court ruled that cities may arrest and fine people for resting outside, even when they have nowhere else to go. This devastating decision goes against the data on how best to end homelessness. Housing solves homelessness – fines and jails do not. These punitive measures make a bad situation worse, by harming people and making it even more difficult for them to access housing in the future.   "America is experiencing the most profound housing crisis it has had in decades, which has left too many people without the safety and security of home," says Dr. Margot Kushel MD. "Federal and state policymakers must make the difficult choices necessary to solve our housing crisis." State and local governments can lead the way in solving the homelessness crisis by investing in proven solutions. Here's how: ➡ increase access to affordable housing for extremely low-income households ➡ expand targeted homelessness prevention ➡ provide support to match the behavioral health needs of the population ➡ increase household incomes "We know that the American people want the homelessness crisis solved and we know that only access to affordable housing for everyone will do that. Today, the Supreme Court has moved us toward a future where people can be arrested for sleeping." Read Dr. Kushel's full statement: https://lnkd.in/g6gzZJja

Couldn’t join us for our recent conversation on behavioral health in San Francisco? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here’s the most important takeaways from PRC leaders and the statewide coalition of social rehab agencies: ✅ There’s more energy and political will around behavioral health in halls of power across California than ever before. Just last year, there were more than 300 bills introduced on behavioral health, shattering levels from previous legislative sessions. That enthusiasm for solutions is in and of itself, a good thing.  ✅ It’s important to keep conversations around public health and criminality separate. Unfortunately, we’re seeing these conversations conflated. People who use drugs aren’t universally experiencing homelessness. People without homes aren’t universally using drugs or living with mental illness. We should reject language that says otherwise. We need to prioritize getting people into treatment, because it’s proven to work.  ✅ Ensuring that everyone has the behavioral healthcare they deserve isn’t the responsibility of the government or one stakeholder. It will take all of us, government leaders, public and private health sector, nonprofits and philanthropy, and the community, working together to get more people housed and more people in treatment. Ready to be a part of the solution? Share this post and video with your community. Sign up for our newsletter in our bio to stay up to date on the latest developments in the PRC community.

Some of the PRC team at this weekend's Pink Triangle set up on Twin Peaks! Our team braved the early morning fog alongside hundreds of other volunteers to reject hate and discrimination. A pink triangle was used by the Nazis in concentration camps to identify homosexual prisoners. This symbol, which was used as an attempt to label and persecute, has now been embraced by the gay community as a symbol of pride. Each year, volunteers build this massive symbol into the hillside as a visible reminder that we can never go back to those times. PRC believes that San Francisco is for everyone and that we're all better off when people are able to be their most true and complete selves in society.

When we see a neighbor in need do we know how to help them? Unfortunately for many of us, that answer is oftentimes no. That’s why our team spent the beautiful morning canvassing the SoMa community, engaging with our neighbors and directing folks to our services. We introduced ourselves to business owners and organizations, leaving behind flyers and palm cards for our low barrier navigation centers, called Hummingbirds, located in the Mission and Potrero Hill. Now, if these SoMa neighbors encounter someone who needs support, they can direct them to these sites so they can receive a hot meal or shower, do laundry, or simply rest and recharge. For many, these programs are the first step to exiting homelessness. We’re actively working towards a reality where anyone in our community can get the care they need at a moment's notice. That vision will take everyone in San Francisco working together, and today’s canvassing is just a start. To learn more about our Hummingbird programs or request these flyers and palm cards for your organization, please contact communications@prcsf.org or go to prcsf.org.

Earlier today we capped off a memorable staff appreciation month with lunch at our headquarters! With program sites across the city, it's a rare treat for staff across the organization to come together in one space and get to know one another. PRC's thoughtful and hard working People Experience team planned an entire month of events, prizes, games, and competitions, and today we were able to finish off the celebrations in style. Please join us in recognizing the people who make PRC's mission possible every day! #wemovepeopleforward

As a supporter of PRC, you're probably aware that we serve thousands of San Franciscans living with mental illness and substance use disorders each year. But do you know how these types of services work across San Francisco and California, and that major changes are afoot? Join us at Manny’s on Wednesday, May 29, at 5:30 p.m., to find out!  Together, we'll explore the hurdles that service providers are facing and examine how recent city and state legislation could change the way nonprofit service providers treat people in need. Amid a state budget shortfall and changing voter attitudes on treatment and public safety, learn first-hand about the innovative approaches that organizations like PRC are taking to meet the needs of our state for years to come.
