Beth Shanaman, Northwest Kidney Centers' Nutrition and Fitness Manager, was awarded a 2024 Puget Sound Business Journal's Health Care Heroes Award for outstanding contributions to nutritional education and steadfast advocacy for people with kidney disease. In her speech, she emphasized the importance of incorporating patients' cultural preferences and values into their diets. Congratulations, Beth! Thank you for all you do for our patients. For the first time at Northwestern Medicine, surgeons performed a kidney transplant procedure where the patient, 28-year-old John Nicholas, was awake during the entire surgery. Instead of general anesthesia, Nicholas received a spinal anesthesia shot and was discharged less than 24 hours after surgery.
