Please join us in congratulating Daniel Keene, a registered nurse at MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital’s neuro trauma intensive care unit and founder of the nonprofit The Valhalla Flag Project, who was awarded a Health Care Hero award from the Puget Sound Business Journal. "I want my legacy to be that I took care of my brothers-in-arms, that I continued my responsibilities as “doc” and made sure every veteran is given the opportunity to have a final salute. In combat I helped patch them up and get them home. Now, when they pass in the hospital, I want to make sure they do so with dignity and respect."
About us
MultiCare is a not-for-profit health care system with roots that go back well over 100 years since the founding of Tacoma’s first hospital. Today, we are the largest community-based, locally governed health system in the state of Washington with more than 20,000 employees including employees, providers, and volunteers. We are a very different organization than we were just a few years ago — larger, more diverse, embracing the changes that come our way as health care continues to evolve. But our commitment to our mission — partnering for healing and a healthy future — and our dedication to the health of the many communities we serve remains constant and unwavering. Our core values of Respect, Integrity, Stewardship, Excellence, Collaboration and Kindness, serve as our guiding principles and impact every aspect of our organization, including how we provide patient care and what we expect from each other. MultiCare is also proud of our commitment to workforce diversity and culturally competent care. This commitment is led by our CEO and supported through employee education and community outreach.

M.A.S.H. Camp is unlike many summer programs in that it is free to attend. While program admission is competitive, it aims to reach students who may have something to contribute to the field. “We’re looking for the students who are interested in science and math and engineering, and we’re looking for students who don’t have a 4.0 that we might be able to encourage. You never know who is interested in this career field, so we’re looking for various backgrounds.”

The COPE Health Care Scholars program gives students an opportunity to gain firsthand experience in both clinical and administrative health care settings. "So many times a cool procedure would be happening and a nurse or a physician would come grab me and say, 'hey you have to watch this,'" said scholar Nadia Mrkaljevic.

Marie Brenden, 59, is an ARNP at MultiCare Rockwood Cancer Center has a record for a 270-pound bench press. She's also a grandmother who got a pacemaker in April. “It’s just lifting weights, but for me, it’s my stress management, because working in a cancer center, it can be sad,” she said. “This is really trivial compared with what my patients go through on a daily basis. They’re inspirational. They have a good sense of humor. It teaches me to appreciate being healthy and to take advantage of it, because you don’t know what’s coming tomorrow.”

Free lunches are available for children under 18, now through August 30th inside Mary Bridge Children’s Outpatient Center – Tacoma. “We eat first with our eyes, which means the presentation of food really matters,” says Erica Lewis, RD, health promotion program manager at the MultiCare Center for Health Equity & Wellness. “We put a lot of care into making meals that kids want to eat. In addition to offering a protein like turkey or peanut butter, the lunches will feature colorful sides of fruits and vegetables as well as milk.”
In partnership with U.S. Department of Agriculture Mary Bridge Children's is providing free summer lunches for children under 18, now through Aug. 30. “Many kids struggle to get their nutritional needs met in the summer months because they often lose access to free or reduced-priced meals at school,” says Erica Lewis, RD, health promotion program manager at the MultiCare Center for Health Equity & Wellness. “Mary Bridge Children’s aims to fill that nutritional gap with healthy food that kids enjoy.” For more information: https://multica.re/4etdNJP
