Our very own Josh Repac, Meritus chief financial officer, was quoted in a story from Becker's Healthcare looking at why these three CFOs are excited about the second half of 2024. With so much happening at Meritus — new medical school under construction, expanding patient care through affiliation with Brook Lane, improving the health of our community through different initiatives — Josh had plenty to talk about! Meritus was thrilled to host Maryland Comptroller Brooke Lierman and share the many ways we’re living our mission of improving the health of the community. Comptroller Lierman toured our Mental Health Walk-In Care office, the Meritus Crisis Center and the proposed Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine. She learned how mental and behavioral health are two of the biggest issues facing our community today, and the walk-in clinic and crisis center are meeting those issues head on. She also saw the new medical school, which aims to fight the shortage of physicians in the region and nation. We thank the comptroller for visiting us and welcome her back any time.

In May, many mourned the loss of PGA golfer Grayson Murray. The 30-year-old professional golfer died just a day after withdrawing from a tour event. In our most recent episode of Close to Home, President and CEO Maulik Joshi and Brook Lane CEO Jeffery O'Neal, MBA, FACHE have an important discussion about eliminating the stigma of suicide and how we as a community work to eliminate it. We recently held our 12th Annual Lean Celebration to highlight 37 Kata process improvement projects being completed by team members across all Meritus service locations. Team members at all levels participate in the Kata Improvement process at Meritus and dedicate countless hours to improving processes. Our Senior leaders, Kata coaches and mentors round twice per week to get updates on the on-going processes and provide advice and guidance to team members. More than 200 team members attended the event to learn about the different Kata projects and how they are improving the processes and reducing waste at Meritus.

Brook Lane, the second-largest mental health organization in Maryland, will become an affiliate of Meritus Health starting July 1. “As we consider the best opportunities to support the total health of our community, while the demand for mental health support and services continues to increase, welcoming Brook Lane to our organization presents an opportunity for our two strong organizations to enhance access to services and provide patients with more coordinated care,” said Maulik Joshi, Dr.P.H., President and CEO of Meritus Health. Hospitals and health systems aren’t just staffed with nurses and doctors. There are thousands of other positions, all vital to providing high-quality care.   But, most hospitals across the country are facing dangerous staffing shortages, as entry-level workers are choosing to leave healthcare to earn more in warehouses or at gas stations.   Meritus Health recently announced a commitment to increase its minimum wage to $20 per hour over the next two years, in phases, beginning this summer.   “We are investing in team members who are a vital part of providing healthcare to our neighbors. Supporting employees improves their lives and improves the level and quality of care we provide. Simply, this is something we can’t afford not to do,” explained our President and CEO, Maulik Joshi, Dr.P.H. We officially broke ground Thursday on the student housing complex for the proposed Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine! The first phase of the 340-unit facility, which will also feature a club house, commons area and dog park, will be move-in ready by summer 2025, just in time for the first class of the medical school. Dave Lehr, Chief Operating Officer for the proposed medical school, told attendees the celebration was truly a celebration of Meritus’ investment in the community’s future, where there are ample physicians to provide essential services, one where the economy is bolstered and thriving, and one where higher education is accessible and poignant. “This is a critically important part of developing a world-class medical school in our community,” he said. “We aim to attract the best medical students in the country to our program. Part of attending medical school is living on campus, becoming part of the community and having access to all of the support that’s needed to thrive through such an arduous program.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eqFbN8v4
